No Power

On the maiden voyage this year my 86 sn2001 had an unusual problem. It starts fine, but when in gear it will not go over 1000 rpms. It just bogs. In neutral it will rev fine. I had a similar problem 3 years ago but with a 3000 rpm limit. That was just some moisture under the distributor cap. The cap is dry now. The throttle linkage also checks out okay.

Last summer I replace the cap, rotor, and wires. And it was running fine before I put it up for the winter.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

have you checked the carb out? you say it bogs down makes me think you may have some trash stopping up the jet or possible the float is sticking.

Also, you say its the first time out this year,...........could be water (condensation) i nthe gas tank. Try some Seafoam or a fuel treatment in the gas tank.

Agree on the carb. Sounding fine at idle is totally different than having a load on it. How long since it was rebuilt?
Check timing, too.

I highly doubt it is a carb problem.... Check your fuel filter and lines for a blockage. Also check out the anti-siphon check valve on top of the fuel tank. Unless you have screwed around with the carb, then there should not be any issues with it. However, a ruptured pump diaphraghm or a leaky float is a possibility....

I don't know if the carb has ever been rebuilt, but like I said it was running fine last year.

Maybe condensation in the tank, but I thought the fuel water separator would handle that and trap most trash in the fuel. Also, when I winterize it top off the tank and add stabilizer.

Hey, my positive battery connection loosened up when on the water to the point that I that it turned off once I motored onto the trailer. Could that be the culprit? If it was tight enough at first to start and run would it still be insufficient enough to cause the power loss?

A loose electrical connection could very well be the problem, but it would not likely occur at a certain rpm consistently....

The very last thing that I would recommend checking is the carb!

I know you mentioned you checked the throttle linkage, but double check the cable is not snapped, a snapped cable will get the boat into gear, but will not provide any rpm to increase the speed, it will only idle along at the engine speed. Hope this helps???

I found that 4 cylinders were not getting spark. Replaced the EI module and it runs like a dream. Problem solved.
