    2001 GT-40 Replacing Engine

I recently bought my first boat which is a 2001 Super Air with the GT-40 with 125 hrs. Long story short six hours into owning the boat it started developing engine issues took it to the mechanic and a cylinder was down. Pulled the heads off to reveal a skidded cylinder. Which bascically meant a complete rebuild. Pulled all the records from the dealer that did all the previous maintenance (California Correct Craft) turns out the engine had two previous complete rebuilds and now looking at its third. Talking to PCM and other mechanics turns out that engine has a history of failure and they say particularly in California. They are unaware of why the engines are failing. Possibly the ECM, clogged injectors or cold water causing the block to shrink causing the piston to skid it. Im now stuck footing the bill for a brand new engine and hoping the next one doesnt fail. You can imagine what a disappointment this has been. Has anyone else had and experience like this and whats been done to resolve the issue?

    Thanks,

    Joe

    1. Did you transfer the warranty into your name and pay the $100 or $150 to PCM? 2. Have you called PCM directly? I had a motor go in my boat and PCM replaced the entire thing with a new crate motor directly from their factory. You may also want to work with other dealers also. I notice that some dealers are much better than other on handling the same issues that you are dealing with. Good luck and hopefully another dealership or PCM can help you out!

Unfortunately the warranty had just expired. Yes I have been in contact with PCM and pleaded my case to them but they tell me its a dealer issue. Unfortunately PCM knows this is an issue with those motors and they'll fix it under warranty but once the warranty runs out your on your own. Dude what a trip im a FF/medic at a station 74 in CA.

Did you purchase the boat from California Correct Craft? If so, was it recently?

No I purchased it private party from someone who purchased it from them. CCC did all the warranty work on the last two rebuilds. They contracted out the block and head work and they admit the machine shop screwed the engine up. It's an unfortunate situation. They are putting in a new engine at cost which will cost $3700 with the trade in of my old engine.

3700 is a pretty good price. I recently did my own motor replacement in an older Ski Nautique and it cost me 2300 for the engine but countless hours of wrenching and swearing.

The reason I asked if you recently bought it is because I looked at a 2001 SAN they were trying to sell for someone. It had low hours like you mentioned, white w/black main stripe, good deal... etc.

Just so you know the 2001 gt-40 is a 25 anniversary of the PCM gt-40 so it comes with a standard 1 year of extra warranty. So total of 3 years, im not sure if this helps you at all, i bought our boat in 2002 summer

Just a heads up, i have a 2001 air nautique with the same engine and i have warranty till the end of the summer 2005.

I just spoke to M2O Marine 3 weeks ago when they were Demoing a boat an San Vincente Reservoir in San Diego He told me that if I had trouble with my 2000 Gt-40, he had one for sale with about 50 hours on it You might want to call him.

Is the bad history related to all GT40 Engines, or just 2001

Wow. Nasty story. Is this "history of failure" related to all GT40 engines or just the 2001? I recently shopped hard to find a GT40 because everyone was bragging about how stout they are. So now I own a 98 Ski Nautique with a low hours GT40 in it and you''ve got me nervous.

The only thing to be afraid of with the GT-40 is pulling your arms off with to much throttle! They are great engines, I have had two (different boats) with ZERO problems. Just keep up the normal maitenance and enjoy!
