    1990 Sport Nautique Overhaul

In the process of buying the family Sport Nautique from the old man. Definitely a great boat but showing her age, according to the VIN she will be 20 this August. Some work is in order to get it to the state I would like for appearance and more importantly functionality.

Item 1. Needing a new alternator soon and thinking while replacing should I upgrade a bit in order to be able to increase stereo capacity down the road? Any suggestions on if I should or shouldn't and what I should replace with. Currently have the original alternator for the ford 351.

Item 2. Ballast Issue.-- Have been rolling with fat sacks out the wahhzzooo a large sack behind the engine box, 2 side sacks on port and starboard and one smaller one in the bow.

Now I had a thought in order to regain some floor space and make some make shift seating. So...

Idea 1. Buy a new fat seat, a locker sack and lead in the bow compartments. My thought for the fat seat is to remove the rear seat and build a box to cover it (the new fat seat doesn't seem like you could sit on it comfortably). I want this box to be like a sun-pad so I could pad and upholster it. I hope I'm explaining what I am envisioning well enough. If I can figure out how to put together a diagram I will post it.

The other option is to find a tank (ballast or fuel tank that would fit) and do a similar design as listed above.

Also has anyone installed perfect pass or other speed control device on a boat this old and how did it go?

Thanks for all input, I can't wait to dig into this project. I know I can get some great advice on here so please let it flow, I don't want to get in over my head.

    RE: 1990 Sport Nautique Overhaul

    Hi Kevin,
I am also slowly redoing my 90 sport. Right now I am using lead in the front and to 450’s on each side of the motor box. I have also thought of replacing the rear seat and putting in a box that would work as a seat. I think you will have to relocate the battery also because it is back there. Here is a web site for a 2001 that has been redone I think there are some cool ideas in it. This is a great site to get ideas because space is also a issue in these boats. If you get any projects started please take some pics. I have also thought about putting a sac in the ski locker and plumbing it in. http://www.the2001.com/index.php?nam...c&start=60

No problem if you are thinking of perfect pass the stargazer works off of GPS so it is an easier install from what I have heard because there is no paddle wheel. They have a carburetor version that works with our boats. I looked into putting it on my boat but the boss said it was not in our budget. What prop are you running? When I tried to run more than 1200lbs I was having a very hard time getting on plane I am thinking about getting a 4 blade prop this year. I would also like to redo my passenger seat like the newer sports and give me more storage.

Ya I'm currently running with a 3 blade and I don't have any problem jumping on plane. Not sure what the prop specs are but I will look into it for you. The stargazer seems like a good option, down the road though.

Just realized you were from Fenton, I used to love in Brighton, spent many of my days at Silver Spray sports. Living down in TN now. What lakes do you ride on there?

I live off a channel on Silver lake and keep my boat at a freinds. I also take it to Ponemia from time to time. Lake Fenton is to busy most of the time to ride. Launched the boat at Silver spray this week as the were closing the gates and then found I had no spark. I had to get towed back to my freinds dock and I just found out that it was a bad coil wire. The wire has the year on it and it is a 1990 LOL. I am going to change all my wires and plugs before the week end.

HA Yeah. WOW leave it to a Nautique to have parts last 19 years. That SN2001 gave me some good ideas, I'm thinking I'm going to try and create some rear facing seating like he did. I'm wondering if I want to make my own similar to his or customize them using parts from the 230 rear facing lean-backs. I think the ideas in my head are going to get difficult and expensive pretty quick. LOL
