    Throttle lever/ starter?

Well I don't know if these are related or not, but on my 1996 SN the throttle lever is very loose. I can just pull it in towards me, and it will come off. I didn't know what is suppose to be retaining it but it is definitely not there. I need to look in to that. Any suggestions or pix/ diagrams would be great.

Also sometimes, just sometimes when I go to start it I turn the key and just hear a small click. When it does this I might have to go from the off position to Start 15-20 times to get it started. I have tried wiggling the throttle lever and not doing anything with it, it doesn’t seem to matter. I think it might be the starter relay (on the starter) or starter its self, but was not sure if it could be related to the throttle lever. I didn't know if you would even get a click if it was not in neutral.

    Thanks!

    RE: Throttle lever/ starter?

    Toster,
Take a look in the reference section of CCfan. They have the manual for the Morse control. It may help finding the missing or broken piece(s).

Before you start changing parts, I always recommend doing testing first. Get some volt readings at the battery while cranking, then at the relay (solenoid) and then at the starter. If you see a voltage drop, start with cleaning up all the connections.

What's the condition of the battery? It is a starting type and hopefully not a deep cycle.

Sounds like brushes in the starter are bad you may want to have it benched tested if you dont find a voltage
      problem.

I is the nutural safty switch would I even hear a click? I thought tha nutural safty switch was an interupt between the key and the starter relay.

I would check your ground wires if they are corroded they could cause the click. I would also check the neutral safety switch. There is a small set screw that should keep the shift lever in place. However if you turn the key and get a click I would suspect the starter if you don't do anything else but turn the key several time to get it to start.

            Toster,
You're correct that you wouldn't here the click if it was a problem with the NSS.

For the handle check for an allen set screw at the base of the handle.

The click-click is what it sounds like when the starter solenoid is going, you probably need to rebuild or replace it.

                RE: Throttle lever/ starter?

Well, after working on it this weekend. The handle set screw was loose. Nice easy fix.....I like those. THANKS!

On the starter, I tested it "in gear" trying to start it, and nothing, not even a click. So I took off the coil wire and had the wife try to "start" it while I took some voltage readings. 12.78 on the battery. Very low ~7 ish something on the starter solenoid. (tested on the small wire to ground). But that’s not where the click is coming from. The relay on the back of the motor is what is making the click. Right next to the relay is a 50 Amp breaker. To me it seems there is a relay (back of the motor), and a solenoid (on the starter). I am not really sure if it is the relay (Not really how to test that).

The click should be the Starter sylinoid engaging. This tells the starter to turn. Is your boat not turning over? Or are you just curious what the click is?

If you boat is not turning over your boats starter may be faulty. To test the starter you can run a volt test at the starter with the igition on should be 13.8 I think. don't quote me on the power. If you are getting power to it, you can hot wire the starter with your key in on position. this will turn your motor. if it works here then the attached synoid is probably loose or shot. tap it with a screw driver. Sometimes they get stuck. try it again. If it starts then you were jsut stuck. If it does not start then your starter sylinoid is shot and you need a new starter.

If you try to jump it and it does not jump there may be a problem at the actual boat sylinoid located under your ECU. This would mean your starter is getting the signal your starte sylinoid is sending it and the boat sylinoid is not processing it.

I went threw this drill on the lake over the 4th. I lost my alternator, starter and main sylinoid however. One after the other. Holy ****!

Sorry for miss spelling sylinoid over and over.....

Replace the starter relay but first make sure the s post has more than 10 volts going to it when you are cranking or you will lock up the relay. if you have less than 10 volts at that post then you will have to look at the wiring from the key to the engine.
