90 Sport Nautique points replacement

Replaced the points on a 90 Sport Nautique with a ford 351 Prestolite distributor.

Gapped with gapping tool, boat runs ok, but I can't get a good dwell reading, any thoughts??

Kevin - Just carefully gap them to .018 inch. Make sure the rubbing block is centered on the cab lobe. Use .018 & then try .019; .019 should have alot of drag. The dwell meter is just a confirmation of correct gap setting, as it is a much more sensitive gage.

Also, if your timing is still right, you know you nailed it.

It is a good idea to add some cam lube too.

As SNobsessed said and make sure the rubbing block is lubed with cam lube it must be set on the high point of the distributor cam lobe. If you have a dwell meter connect it to the negative side of the coil and ground it should be set on 8 cylinder and should read about 30 degrees. Check timing after points are set any change in point gap will change the timing.
