    Electrical Issues with 2003 SANTE

I'm hoping somebody can help me out here.

I just took my boat (2003 SANTE) out for the first time this season.

It had a hard time starting, everytime I hit the start button on the keypad, I would lose power to the dash. The engine would turn over, but I don't believe it was getting any spark. The second I let go of the start button, power would come back to the dash, and the plugs? It did eventually fire up after a few tries, it caught after I released the start button.

Another new issue, when returning the throttle to the neutral position from forward, I would get some grinding, and I would also temporarily lose power to the dash.

It eventually lost power to the keypad too, and I had to shut off the boat using the switch by the throttle.

Could this all be related to the keypad?

I have not had any other issues with the keypad, all the buttons and accessories work fine.

    Thanks

    bump

about to buy a new keypad, but I'm not convinced that's the problem since all the buttons work jut fine.

another interesting thing it does, sometimes when starting it, if I hold the start button down and it doesn't start right away, occasionally it will lose power to the keypad, but it will keep cycling the start button, so it ends up in an endless loop of trying to start the boat.
Only way to stop it is to flip the toggle switch to off...

    Anybody have any thougths?

    Thank You

Except for the not-getting-any-spark you described and the grinding coming to neutral, it sounds suspiciously like the keypad. Generally when trying to get the keypad to function and weird things happen, its the keypad. Another symptom is that it may intermittently work, or not. When you say "all the buttons work just fine," I take it that the push of the buttons feel like they should, but the functions the buttons control are not functioning correctly. Be certain to call multiple deals for price. I have found them below $300 and above $600 for the same keypad. richard on this board has successfully repaired his own keypad by cutting it open, cleaning it, and reassembling it. Moisture entering the unit causes the contact to become corrupt and thus the keypad does not function properly.

When I say all the buttons function on the keypad, I mean they do what they're supposed to do.
each individual button works as specified, horn, ballast, blower, lights etc...
numbers for the keypad are ok.
Start button attempts to start it, but the dash loses power as does the entire keypad occasionally

I have also noticed occasionally when the boat is running, power is lost to the keypad, so engine has to be shutdown with the toggle switch.

The end of last year I started to notice the starting issue.
The grinding when returning the throttle to neutral is new this year

It could be only one of two things, either the key pad or the greyhill pme that is causing the problems. the grinding could be the starter trying to engage when the motor is running.

            Thank You!

Any idea how I can isolate the problem to either the keypad or pme?

Really no easy way of doing it except to replace one then hope it is not the other. But of all the problems like yours it usually the keypad.

When my keypad went out, it started with the start button. It had to be pressed very hard to start the boat, but I could press the stop button to kill it without a problem. At the time I did not realize the potential for the keypad being bad, and it wasn't until the following year that the other buttons started going bad. So, it could be the keypad, or not. They get worse with time and are tough to diagnose until you replace it. You might borrow a buddy's (they are very easy to swap) and see if that solves the problem before dropping the coin for a new one. Good luck and let us know.

I will be ordering a new keypad today, hopefully that solved the problem.
If not I guess I'll be looking at the pme...
