    Newbie Impeller Questions

    Boat = 92' Sport with GT-40 w/ ~300 hrs

    We are in the process of doing some maintenance on the boat, oil change, tranny fluid change, etc and we considered getting a new impeller. Have not had any problems with heat other than it goes up a bit at idle from 1 60 to 180, but that seems normal.

    My question is where exactly is the impeller on this engine. I followed the intake from the hull below the engine in the rear to the strainer, then from the strainer to a section that looks like a tranny fluid heat exchanger, then around the engine to a little pump looking thingie on the belts, bottom right when facing the engine. Is this the impeller?? The body is only a couple inches across with a large spindle wheel on one of the belts. The hose then leads up to the heads and seems to mix in with the main cooling system and water pump.

    Kind of a stupid question but this is my first experience maintaining a boat and like everyone else, my time on the lake should be spent running the boat, not fixing it. Any suggestions on how to open it up and check the impeller are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    Yep thats the raw water pump, just undo the two bolts that secure it to the engine, remove the two pipes and remove the pump. now you can release the 3 bolts that hold the pump together.
    make sure that the o ring seal is not damaged when you fit the new impellor. Make sure that the pump is on the correct way when you refit it to the motor. the little screw in the side of the pump should be nearest the motor on your engine.

    A job well worth the little time it takes.

      Thanks b2, I searched this forum and someone posted a link to aquaskier showing the replacement with pics and all!!! Seems kind a silly to not know, but it's my first time dealing with boats. Seems like every overheating problem leads back to the impeller, so it's time to change it out and stay on the water!!

      Thanks again.

        Flux, is that really a GT-40 in your 92? I had thought that they ran the Pro Boss (no injection) til 1994. Is it a repower? 300 hrs is great on a 92'. Thanks

          darrel409, please note the "newbie" in the subject line. Yes, you are correct, it's the Pro-Boss Ford 351 carbed. I have been looking at newer Nautiques (SAN's) and my lingo is all messed up.

          It is actually my buddies boat that I help with and have the priveledge of using, so I pitch in whenever I can. He got it 2 yrs ago from AZ and brought it to CA. I will assume that it is completely original, save for the alternator and stereo. He also put a tower on it since we are wakeboard fiends.

          The boat is pretty cherry, and he knew what he was looking for when he bought it. he had also been looking at a SN2001, but it was run on salt water, so he opted for the sport. Being weekend warriors, we only get to put about 50hrs a year on it, and he bought it with about 200 hrs. The weathe out here is kind to boats, and it looks new save for the usual scratches and wear marks. Runs like **** and we plan to keep it that way.

                We are up in Palmdale, north of LA so riding is limited. Buena Vista is where the pics are taken, and that is where we usually ride. We go a few times a year to Havasu & Nacimiento. Once in a while a day trip to Pyramid or Castaic, but those lakes are very crowded. We like to camp up at BV and Naci.

                Yourself??
