    High Idle

Hello out there ! New to this forum and hoping I can avoid a costly shop visit with the help of y'alls insight. I have a '96 sport nautique with a PCM 351. Recently I have encountered a high idle when things get up to temp. I swapped out the fuel filter as part of reg. maint. then had the fuel line from the hi press. pump split. No biggie but it left me wrenching in the parking lot for an hour trying to diagnose (plus 170.00 new pump that wasn't needed). Called the shop and they said that normally these problems are fuel pump related. If this is 90% correct, I'll go get a new lo-psi pump, put both new pumps on a nd give it a whirl. Have any of you encountered this and found it to be a specific problem to this motor / model ? Thanks for any and all help. Mutt

    RE: High Idle

    Carb'd?

You might want to pull the bowls off, clean the jets, and adjust the idle back to factory setting. You could just have something funky going on in there.

      High idle

Before you spend to much money, you want to buy a fuel pressure gauge that will allow you to check the fuel pressure. Daniel C has a good post on how to check the pressure. It sounds like you are Fuel injected. Check you perfect pass and make sure nothing is keeping the idle open. Pull the spark arrestor and check the throttle throat to make sure it is clean and smooth. Make sure the butterfly can seat correctly. I wouldn't touch the idle screw yet.

How fast is high idle at warm up?
Was this the first time it has ran after it sat all winter? The ECU takes time to learn again after a long winter.

Let us know what fixes the problem

        RE: High idle

so i was going to water test today, but it looks like it's gonna rain. the high idle usually only occurs after engine warms up. let's say i pull to neutral to pick up a rider, the rpms will rev up to around 1500 or so, then in idle it will kick a bit and then idle about the same. if i hit some reverse it will go away for a while. turning it off and back on helps for a minute. the guys who worked on coordinated with pcm ont he fix and they seem to have narrowed it down to the p.p., but didn't tell me what it could be if that is not the case. i' will let you guys know and if it isn't the p.p. i'll have them check the fuel pressure. wasn't there a recall for l.p. fuel pumps for an 05?this whole thing started when i had the old secc install closed loop. they didnt hook up all the hoses and i've had the idle problem ever since. b/c it worked great for the 30 hours i had it in florida before i moved back to bama

Let us know what's the problem with Perfectpass if that's the case.
It seems I have a similar problem:

We must have got our posts confused, This is not gride 300. This is for the origonal Motomutt idle problem. No perfect pass. I use a GPS and a steady throttle. Haven't got good enough to hit the buoys yet. I will check the fuel pressure. That keeps coming back as a recurring fix on these models. Tried to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery. Little stuff first. Right ! I'll check the throttle body tomorrow also. I'll keep you posted. BTW I hate this 15 mph wind we're having here in Sacramento
