    removing paint

Registering boat in new state and letters are painted on what would be the best way to remove these letters will acetone hurt the gel coat?

    RE: removing paint

Acetone would be my first try! I've never noticed any negative effects of acetone on gel. I've used it several times to remove adhesive residue. If for some reason it does harm the gel coat, a little polishing will have you back in good standing! If the acetone doesn't cut it, you may have to get precise with some sandpaper

A freind of mine used acetone to remove some painted letters on his boat but it was a white hull just a little nervous to use it my all black hull.

Acetone will in no way harm the gel. Many people, including myself find that oven cleaner works better. Also, paint stripper will work fine and not harm the gelcoat. Gelcoat is pretty much resistant to all chemicals (yes, someone can probably find some chemical that will attack it, but non that I know of). If in doubt, do a test in a hidden area first.
