    As for gunnel straps - wrap a microfiber towel around the strap at gunnels before tightening the strap.

      Remember the strap is more about holding the trailer up against the boat than holding the boat down on the trailer. If it's gonna bounce you want the trailer and boat to bounce together. That said you really don't need an incredibly strong mounting point. The platform brackets are more than adequate for holding the trailer and boat as one. Boat buckle straps bolted to the trailer are great, after having them I won't go without.

        I followed my brother up to Shasta Lake on I-5 and somewhere through Redding watched his boat come up off the trailer a few times through a series of bumps on the highway. After that trip he put the belts on! It's not very good to have your 3000lb boat slam up and down on your trailer bunks!
