I have a 1990 Ski Nautique. The starter began hanging up a couple of years ago but it happened very infrequently. It has gradually started happening more and more and now I need to deal with it. When starter hangs up turning switch off has no affect as starter keeps turning. Pulling coil wire has no affect. I can sometimes get it to stop by continuing to turn switch back and forth and other times I have to disconnect battery.
I had starter rebuilt last winter. Boat completely died a couple of weeks ago and had solenoid replaced which got it back starting. I have been told that it sounds like the starter relay is hanging up and that it could be relay, battery, bad battery cables/connections or bad starter or bad switch. The battery is several years old but seems strong.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or what order to start replacing parts? Thanks.
