1984 Ski Nautique 2001 Idle Question

I am trying to get the engin to run smooth in gear and not go up too much out of gear. The engine is a 351 Ford Pleasure Craft. I have tried to adjust the low idle jets in conjunction with the throtle stop. Previously a friend had it running smooth in and out of gear at apx 550. Now for example if I were to close the jets all the way down how far would I need to back them out. How far do the low idle jets need to be turned out and then what needs to be done with the throtle stop. Thank you for any thoughts. I have owned this boat for almost 20 years and never had this problem.

My 1984 2001 idled in neutral at exactly 650RPMs and dropped to 550RPMs when placed in gear, both smooth as silk. This was after I installed electronic ignition and rebuilt the carb. I believe the idle jets were one turn out from softly seated. It also had better throttle reaction than any other boat I have owned, instant and precise. I sure miss that ugly old brown boat, it did everything so willingly.
