Is there a correct way to shut down a overheated engine? I have been reading about guys that shut down their engines after overheating them and end up with a hydrolocked engine. I just bought a 95 super sport with the GT40 engine and would like to know what to do to prevent this from happening if I ever do overheat the engine.

RE: Correct way to shut down a overheated engine
I think the heater runs off the hot water from the engine and then jets back the exhaust, I don't think it does anything to cool the engine down. The engine cools itself from the freshwater coming off the RWI. Just keep an eye on the temp gauge, like you keep an eye on all your gauges, and if it starts going north abnormally, shut it down.Travis Fling

The heater will have zero effect. That only sort of works in a car.
I would just open the motor box and hope it cools rather quickly. nothing else you can really do.the WakeSlayer

A GT-40 engine will go into limp mode, and protect itself.
I lost the bearings on the raw water pump, and that happened to me. Somebody else was driving.
Running the heater will draw some heat out of the engine, provided there is still water in the engine block, but the engine has to be running, to turn the circulating water pump, and is making more heat than the heater is removing.
If you have a shower hooked up, running that will draw hot water out of the block, and it is replaced with cold water from the lake.
