wiring into ignition switch on 96 super sport

I want to wire my ballast pump switches thru the ignition switch so they can't be turned on without the ignition switch pushed in. Does anyone know which wire to take from ballast switch and which wire to tap that into on ignition switch? Do I still run wire from ballast switch to battery or do I just go to ignition switch

What pumps are you using. That will have the biggest effect on how and if you can do it. If you are needing to run ballast puppies then you are out of luck unless you wire in relays. The wire that runs from the battery to power the dash is rather puny and not designed to power a big pump like that. You could wire a relay off of one of the push in breakers on the right side of that panel.

^^ Brad is right, there is no way the dash harness will handle the power. Assuming you are using the Jabscos, just wire them direct, the likelihood of you bumping them and not knowing is very minimal. Direct wiring you won't need the relays and it is pretty straightforward.

I am running 3 ballast puppies. Are you saying I can tap them into the accessory switch instead of the ignition switch. Any explanation here would be great. I'm not exactly an electrician

Wire them directly to your battery. If you want to mess around you can add relays, but in my opinion, it is just easier to do it directly. You are not going to leave them running, and if you bump the switch for some reason, you will most defnitely hear them. You really do not need to worry about having them protected by your ignition.

FWIW, here is a wiring discussion Brad and I had last winter. A bunch of ballast puppies shipped with switches that were wired whacko.

Thanks for the help. I guess that makes my life easier for now. I was really dreading figuring out how to wire to that ignition. I guess that is why I bought the run-dry protected ones.

The term "run-dry" is a little decieving. You can get away with it for a little bit, but you don't want to do it. Just get an extra impeller or two. They are cheap and easy to change should the need arise. I have had my system in for the 3rd season now. Mine came with the correct yellow impellers. I just recently got a couple spares to keep in the boat. A friends came with the black impellers and they burned out. He has had his yellow ones burn out when someone left a pump on. His motor is quite loud so they did not notice. This would have happened either way as the 502 was running at the time. The also now make green ones, but I am not sure what the benefit is. I know the yellows are fine.

Lotsa good ballast installs on here, wake_fun, bchesley, etc.

                good luck

thanks again. I'm not worried about not hearing it. I just am a little hesitant that the switch might get bumped during cleanup or something like that. I'm sure it will be fine.

If it gets bumped while cleaning yoiu will know it. The pumps are pretty loud. I would not worry at all about it.
