    GT-40 difficult to turn over

I noticed this two time ago and then again yesterday on my 99 Air with GT40. When cranking, the engine does not want to turn over. The starter is chugging away great and the battery is fully charged. From my limited knowledge of engines, it seems like a "no fuel" or fuel injector issue. However, once the engine does turn over, it runs like a dream. Giving the throttle a little (like one would do with a carbed engine) is how I was able to turn the engine over, although is not easy as it also shuts off the ignition when you do this (presumably because it is EFI). Oh, no difference here whether warm or cold start.

For reference, since I bought the boat last year and most of the beginning of this season, the engine would turn over in about 0.5 - 1.0 seconds when turning the key every single time.

Any ideas? Dirty gas? Dirty injector? FCC (I have no idea when this was changed, if ever).

How new is the battery? Possibly weak starter. What you are discribing isnt fuel related, that is for sure.

RE: GT-40 difficult to turn over

2 Batteries are new this season. Optima duals. 1 is isolated for the stereo and the other is for the motor and other items. I keep them trickle charged with a CTEK charger and turn them off completely with a Blue Seas switch after use. Both showed full charge when I arrived to take the boat out yesterday. I turned off everything except the blower when testing but still had this same problem. I think it is safe to rule out the battery as the culprit, although just to be sure, next time I am down there, if I have the same problem, I will use the combine override to combine my two batteries for cranking and see if that makes a difference. I would be surprised, but you never know.

I just had a starter go bad on my other boat (96 Tige) thanks to excessive rain when I had the boat moored to my dock without a cover. The bilge flooded and the bilge pump has never really worked in an automatic capacity. At any rate, after that rain, the starter sounded terrible and the engine took a long time to turn over. It got worse for about 2 days until I replaced it. The new starter works perfectly and sounds great.

Last year on my Tige I ran into a bad fuel pump problem. Engine wanted to turn over, starter cranked like a champ, but it just would not turn over. After replacing the fuel pump (carb engine), it worked fine for the season.

The symptoms I am having with my Nautique seem a lot closer to the fuel pump issue I had last year on the Tige than the starter issue I had this year on the Tige (the Nautique starter sounds as good or better than my new starter in the Tige). But the Nautique is still firing eventually and running fine after that. If the fuel pump were not working, I would expect problems to continue after the engine turned over. It is really wierd, that is for sure.

I am having a similar problem on my 99SN GT 40. It has actually cut out like someone turned off the ignition. When shut off, sometimes it won;'t start. Starter is turning over the engine fine. I bypassed the kill switch and that is not it.

        Have you found anything?
