Red Engine warning light on

Does anyone know if there is a way to reset the big red warning light on a 1993 Sport Nautique. I installed the impeller backwards at the end of last year and overheated the motor briefly. It hit the 220 degree mark before realizing but then I immediately shut it off. The light is now on all the time even though there is plenty of oil and the temp is at 160 degrees. Any ideas?

How's your oil pressure? You don't have any oil leaks, do you? Once you determine that your oil pressure and temperature are okay, I'd do the follwoing, assuming you didn't blow a head gasket when it overheated.

I'd start by replacing the oil pressure sending unit. If that soesn't solve your problems, try the temperature sending unit. I believe those should be the only two things that should cause that light to come on. I've never heard of anyone having to reset that light.

Thanks for the input Jeff. No indications of a blown head gasket, i.e. water in the oil. Oil pressure is same as before and the temp is fine as well. I will give each of those senders a try.

Also, there is a low volt warning as well. Could it be that? The best online store is skdim.com. They will also answer many of your questions as well.

Red Light

Have a 95 Sport, same problem. Dealer still insists its normal--last three seasons. All systems fine--again according to the experts.

Unfortunately, I hate it when things do not work the way they are supposed to!

Any ideas would be appreciated.

What motor is in your boat? It is probably the oil pressure switch or the temperature sending unit causing the light to be on.

Warning Light

Ford 351/5.8 PCM TPFI

Oil pressure sending unit replaced.

Temperature sensor replaced two years ago after impeller desintegrated-- first drive after dealer service (replacement of impeller). Melted exhaust and fried sending unit.

Light was on before these problems, attempted fixes and it is still on. I am out of ideas, any input would be appreciated!

There are only two things that cause the light to be on. Especially with the GT40 engine. run the boat and disconnect the two wires from the engine temp switch (top drivers side of engine). If the light goes out, it is that switch. If it stays on, it is the oil pressure switch. All guages read ok? I guess you could try to replace the light itself. I haven't seen one go bad but it is a possibility.

Hello, it could also be a bad ground.....had the same issue on a 1991 SN recently......I had zipped tied some wires together running in the bilge area to clean it up....turns out I moved the ground wire mounted to the engine block.....moved it enough to loosen the wire from the clamp mount (apparently it was ready to go, I just moved it enough to make a difference).

After taking it off, cleaning it up and re-clamping the connection and bolting it up, all was well.

Have you disconnected the battery to reset?? Not sure about your engine, but that is the only way to rested the check engine light on the GT-40
