    Prop Damage - Replacement questions

Knowing that I learned a valuable lesson this weekend....

I am in need of replacing a 4 blade prop on a 99 Sport Nautique - Inboard. I have the 330 horse engine...exact type of engine is not at the tip of my tonque...sorry.

First - what are the repair/rebuild options? How much damage is too much?

Second - What are my replacement options? Are there various manufactures that are good? Which is the best manufacturer? What should be the price ranges?

Third - What other types of damage should I be worried about. These are my initial observations. -The fiberglass on the bottom looks great. No damage to the fiberglass above the prop. No damage to the forward fins. No damage around the shaft mount (below). No leaking around the shaft seals. No rudder damage or even scraping marks. No damage or signs of damage at rudder mount.

    Any other suggestions?

Sorry to hear about your prop, I'd talk to the guys at SKIDIM. I bought a new prop a couple months ago and they were very helpful, I'm sure they'll steer you towards an ACME prop. I got the 4 blade and standard price was $365 delivered, (I got an additional 10% discount from Correctcraftfan.com). Good luck.

I groung 1/2 of one of the blades off my 13X13 Nibral prop due to a moment of brain fade. I called Johnson Prop (OJ Props) in Tenn. and for 80.00 they repaired it and even cupped it. Call them they can tell you if your prop os repairable ore not. Good luck

Mike-d.....what's the difference in having a stainless steel versus the original material? Also, how do I find out for sure that that prop will fit my boat?

Any body got any other suggestions about shaft damage or anything else that I should be aware of?

Rick - how fast was the turn around on you prop rebuild? I have got a houseboat trip the weekend of the 17th (Sept)?

          thanks for your responses.....

The turnaround was about 5 weeks. Sounds like youi need a new prop with this repaired as a spare.

Call Bill Weeks at Acme Marine. He'll send you the proper prop for that boat. If you don't like it, send it back within 30 days and get your money back.

As far as any other damage, once you put the new prop on, check for any unusual vibration. I bet every thing else is ok.

              Good luck.

I've messed up my second prop of the season last Thursday--Deadheads everywhere in lake Chelan.

I removed the newly damaged prop and put the re-built prop on. It has the most annoying high pitched noise from 1-6 mph and above 6 mph it stops. In all other respects the prop was perfect. The prop was dented so I don't think any material was removed.

                Any ideas!

                Both go back tomorrow.

Mike-D....no thanks on the stainless prop. Getting feedback that the stainless props can cause more damage because they don't give as much as the Nibral material. Thanks for the offer.

Also, I talked to my dealer and I am going to go for the new prop and rebuild for my spare.

                  thanks

Get an ACME prop, Bill Weeks will set you up. Also if you hit hard i would check out the strut and the shaft for damage. dont forget to re align engine, .003 . Will save you more in the long run. I had to do this procedure already this summer. 2 bad struts, 2 bad, non repairable props and 2 bent shafts. Good luck

                      ICAP,

I have the exact same problem. Bent the tip of my ACME 4 bladed prop on my '01 Ski, sent it to be reconditioned and now it has a high pitched almost harmonic sound between 650 -- 1200 rpm's.

I have talked with everyone I know and nobody has a clue!! It must be some small pitch mis-alignment causing the prop to sing (but then why does it only happen as slow speeds?). All other performance aspects are perfect.

Drives me crazy so I am going to do exactly what you did which is break down and buy a new prop and use this one as a spare.

Please let me know if you find anything out!!!!!!!

                      Thanks,

                      Greg

Darrel409 - Dealer is going to check out the shaft alignment, and other possible damaged items. His initial thought was that the shaft was most likely OK....but he will double check at the same time as prop replacement.

Well....guess this lesson is going to be a little harder than I thought...

Got preliminary report from dealer - shaft is bent, shaft support is bent, fiberglass is damaged....

Just goes to show you, it's best to take it to the dealer to confirm any "not easily" seen issues.

                          Also, thank God for insurance.

Splash180, SKIDIM had better pricing on strut and shaft for my 95 SN than my dealer did. I got an ARE shaft only, no coupler. Used my coupler from the old shaft saved $100. I paid less than my deductible for all the parts and I did the install.

                            Good Luck

I have got a houseboat trip a week from tomorrow...and I will be out of town in between....plus, I haven't had much experience with this type of mechanical work. I am going to have the dealer do the work and get the parts. That way they will cover them for warranty work if installed or defected in the near future.

Plus, parts alone, are well over $1000. Still don't have a final on the fiberglass repair and labor...so after all that $100 won't make a big impact. Plus insurance should cover after the deductable.

Thanks for the input.....will be good knowledge for the future...although, I am hoping and praying that this won't ever happen again...
