This weekend ive decided to replace my rudder packing and to repack the grease in the "rack and pinion"?? part as well. Looking for recomendations on where to purchase packing for the rudder and what type of grease should be used in the steering wheel mechanism.

RE: Weekend Projects
Packing from any Marine Store I like the Teflon impregnated. I believe you need 1/4" for the rudder. I wouls use a good quality marine grease for the steering.Nautiqueless in San Diego

RE: Weekend Projects
Abel - When I replaced my steering cable last year, there was a warning not to use any additional grease. I did some research & figured out the reason for this warning was that petroleum grease will soften the plastic liner in the cable. So I used synthetic grease (Hi temp brake caliper grease from NAPA to be exact) when I worked on the helm. It's appearance was identical to the grease that came on the cable. FYI, good luck.

RE: Weekend Projects
ah thanks for the input, i already replaced the steering cable itself, which wasn't too bad of a job, but i am still unhappy with how much resistance i feel in the steering wheel, however i really don't have any other experience in another Nautique to judge how easy they are to steer. The cable replacement was an improvement but i feel there is more resistance than there still should be. And again thanks for the help guys, being new to the Nautique world all the help is greatly appreciated.

RE: Weekend Projects
Abel - If your cable is new, the other points of corrosion would be the helm or rudder itelf. I would unhook the rudder from the cable & see if it gets better. The rudder might need some grease or the packing replaced. The helm might have the plastic bearings worn thru - it is a very simple device & easy to take apart. If you have a tilt steering wheel, that joint could also be the problem. You need to isolate the resistance.
