    Pin Stripping

So I had the local dealer install new pinstripping on my nautique twice and both times the stripping did not stick to the boat. The first time it did not work they blamed it on not dewaxing the boat enough. The second time they started to blame it on old pin stripping, but then told me that it came out of a new box. Is this common or is there something they are missing?

Also, as a side note, I had to drive to pick the boat up both times and notice the pin stripping, clear as day, peeling off my boat. I wish they would have checked it before making me drive out to the dealer. I do not think that is asking too much.

The pinstripping is not the stickiest pinstripping in the world. The gelcoat has to be clean. I rub the area down with rubbing alcohol, and before the alcohol dries wipe it again with a clean rag, or paper towel. If there is any doubt about the condition of the gelcoat, I buff the area lightly first. Wipe with alcohol again, after buffing.
I am telling you this because I recommend you do the pinstripe yourself.
I believe a roll of pinstripe tape is less than $20.00, and has enough to do the boat three times, and have a little left over
I did have a problem with some old pinstripe tape, but a newer roll sticked just fine.

I agree with DanielC. I took all the old stripes off my '03 SAN and had a friend that has a graphics shop pinstripe mine with chrome pinstripping. He did all the cleaning with the solutions before putting them on, and its been on there for 2 years without any problems.

Well, the dealer put new pin stripping on it for the third time and again it peeled right off once it got in the water. I may have to give it a go on my own and see if I can do better than the dealer.

Your dealer is doing a crappy job, and should be held accountable at least for a refund. They are either using poor material, or more than likely not following the steps Daniel laid out. Pretty simple concept and if anyone should have it right it is the guy billing you to do it.

Ray Charles could pinstripe a boat. Do it yourself.

LOL. That was funny. A tad cruel, but very funny.

                  Hilarious!

The dealer said they will refund the money. I am going to buy some pinstripping and take a run at doing it myself when it gets a little cooler (especially after the Ray Charles comment).

                  Thanks for the advice guys.

You know, if you really want it done right, find a biker/auto striper who will do it in Imron. that is the way the super yachts and cigarette boats are done. Thank goodness CC has dropped tape in its new 200.
