Anyone know how to avoid messy oil filter change on GT40?

Has anyone figuired out a trick to remove the oil filter without spilling dirty oil into the bilige on a GT40 in a 196? Pulling the drain hose through the floor allows draining of the oil pan with no mess - however whenever you unscrew the oil filter you get half a litre of oil in the bilige? Am I missing something?

I have used a plastic bag around it and it worked pretty good.

I'm talking a garbage bag, then I throw away the paper towels I use as well.

Yep, full size garbage placed below the filter. Just spin it off into the bag and your mess goes away.

            Oil filter change

Trim a gallon plastic milk jug down, works well, position under the filter and carefully remove. If you can get a tupperware type conainer out of the house, they work well also, just don't get caught by the wife

              RE: Oil filter change

Just did my second oil change of the season. 2198.2 hours total on my 1997 Ski Nautique.
use a Motorcraft FL1-A oil filter. It has a good anti drainback valve.
After sucking to old oil out, put the drain hose into a container, under the boat, and let it sit overnight. You will probably get about a half to 3/4 quart of oil out of the engine.
The next day, put a rag in the bilge, and take a second rag, wrap it around the filter, and you should be able to remove the filter without spilling oil.
The key is to let the boat sit overnight before removing the oil filter.

If you can get a container under it you could punch a hole in it and let it drain before removing it.

                  RE: Oil filter change

The oil is coming out of the oil passages in the engine. After letting the engine sit overnight, the oil filter is still full of oil.
I use Valvoline 40W VR-1 oil in my engine. It has the zinc and phosphorus additives the camshaft in a GT-40 engine needs. After sitting overnight to drain, the engine needs 4 1/2 quarts of oil. Before putting the new oil filter on, I put a half quart of oil in the filter.

I tried to drain mine the other week but I could get no oil out of it and ended up borrowing a suction kit.I didnt warm the oil as it was a very hot day and gave up after an hour or so.
Do you guys have a prcedure you do ? The drain pipe is not block just no oil flowed at all. Also I hear lots about these additives you use ? are they in the oil or do you buy them seperate ?

The key for us is to run the boat and bring it up to temperature....we usually do this in the driveway hooked up to the garden hose. Once the oil is warm, it flows right out, no problems!

Thanks guys -- lots of good advice - I have never left it drain overnioght but I will try it this weekend. Large garbage bag should also help.

I also use a plastic bag with minimal mess. I don't drain overnight. Kinda pointless if you ask me. Do you guys that drain overnight, drain overnight in your cars too?

If you ask me, leaving a 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart of dirty oil inside the engine kind of defeats the point of changing the oil in the first place.
I do let my car sit overnight when I change the oil. I am not trying to beat a flat rate. I am trying to make my engine last as long as possible.
But I only have 2203.5 hours on a 1997 Ski Nautique GT-40 engine. What could I possibly know?
