Cost for total Faria upgrade?
Timing of this thread is very good for me. I am considering the upgrade from my 95 Ski to a 2001-2003 Air or Sport. I have located a very nice 2001 Air Nautique at a reasonable price and have a tentative test drive scheduled for next weekend (were both busy this weekend).
My big concerns are the resettable hours and the viewing of the gauges. The boat in question is being sold as a low hour boat, but I am now questioning this. If I decide to buy the boat I would like to upgrade all the gauges to daylight visible units, has anybody done this? If yes, what is the cost? I can handle the installation so it is a cost of parts issue.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I only have a problem seeing the gauges when the sun is in the wrong position. I think it is when the sun is directly over head and the bimini is not installed. If it has the GT-40, I would request the service record that validate the no. of hours on the boat. If there are no service records, then some questions should be raised about the maintenance on the boat. I would figure that low hours whold be verified with a very clean engine, and high hours whould show worn vinyl and a generally less clean bilge, engine, and boat overall.

Mike I upgraded from a 66 Barracuda to a 2000SN with the GT-40 Engine. See if there is a mechanical hour meter in the bulkhead just next to your left knee when you are driving. Mine had one and it read 1236 hours. The Tach read 954 and the PP read aroung 600. I knew it was a high hour boat because it was used at a ski lake as a club boat. Even with the high hours the boat runs like a dream and has never given me any troubles. The guages work well and I almost never have trouble seeing them. Also keep in mind that PCM says 2000 to 2400 hours before rebuild.Nautiqueless in San Diego

Personally, I'm not saving my boat for the next owner....
I using it as much as possible.... a well maintained boat is just that..
regardless of hours...
IMHO the 2000 to 2002 boats will hold value as long as you keep good records.... and up on scheduled maintenance....2001 PAN 1995 ramlin single axle

Thanks to all for the input. It was interesting to read about Mike, who was recently looking at a "low hour" SAN, then read later that someone else bought the same vintage boat we are talking about ('00-'02) and it had 1200 hours.
Mike, what if the tach had just been replaced 4 months ago and it now shows 150 hours, but in reality it was also used at a ski school or as a competition boat and has greater than a 1000 hours on it. Would you pay the same price? I know I wouldn't. Frankly, you have no way of knowing exactly how many hours are on all models of CC boats using the digital Teleflex gauges.
All of this just brings me back to my original point that the Teleflex tachometer has the Responsibility for tracking engine/boat hours which to most buyers is a major concern in purchasing a used boat. If I have no way to honestly represent my boat on the market, I have a significant loss of value and believe that the manufacturer of the product should be held responsible.
Just as a side note (which is also a bit funny), my tach now resets to 0 Hours everytime I switch the mail kill switch to the off position. Great, I have a brand new boat everytime I turn it off!!!!!!

If the tach did not track the hours, and it was a dedicated meter, a disreputable person could just as easily replace the meter and get no hours. So your argument is only half true.
I like the fact that the chebby engines track the hour in the putter.

Ceats can always find away to cheat. New meters, whatever. Fact is though that the guages fail to record hours correctly is a well known issue, hence the value of true low hour SN's is diminished. The shadow of doubt translates into skeptical buyers which means less $ when it comes time to sell. Hasn't happened on my 02 but has happened on a buddies 01 with a true 156 hours. Or at least it was a true 156 hours. Now after it bounced from 0 to 900 and back their is no way to know. When he goes to sell this boat what is he supposed to tell the prospective buyer? Hooray.. I got my analog guages today. Here are pictures. There are no instructiuons but it looks fairly straight forward. The only problem and this is a gotcha. If you have perfect pass they already they send you a Y harness to use the PP paddlewheel. If not they send the wheel. I got the wrong kit but my dealer is sending me the harness as soon as he receives it. As soon as I get it I will try to document the retrofit. Rick do you know if it is possible to get the guages with the silver bezels?(or whatever you call the black edges on those guages) Our '02 has all silver bezels and I would love to keep it that way.Jeff

So they would look very similar to the fuel, batt, temp, and oil pressure gauges on mine?
Also, how much do they run?
And, is that LCD for the hours? And if so, is it programable to keep how many hours you actually have, or will there yet be another discrepancy in hours?

So, is $250 what people are paying for the kit? That is what my dealer just quoted me and said it didn't matter if you got the paddle wheel or not, it would be the same price. Like Rick said, they can order them in silver or black. I didn't think to ask about programing the hours though...I doubt it would, seems like it would be easy for people to be setting thier hours back and forth.Jeff
