1998 Ski Nautique GT40 Steering Cable

1998 Ski Nautique - I am due for a new steering cable after noticing the steering is starting to take two hands especially to the right. I live in Boise, ID and I believe our Correct Craft dealer is no more.

Does anyone have a website and/or part number to order a new one?

    Thanks,

    Dave

RE: 1998 Ski Nautique GT40 Steering Cable

Steering cables are very hard to come by right now due to reduced production and suppliers temporarily shutting down production due to the slow economy. That being said, try White Lake. Don't forget to use the PlanetNautique discount!

N3 had mine a couple weeks ago, and I had been trying to get one for most of the summer.

I had the PLEASURE of replacing my steering cable this weekend. It was like a 3 1/2 hr job. if my boat was stock (no stereo) it would have been much faster.

We were out and all of a sudden I had no stearing. The Rack split in 2. No big deal I was able to get to the rudder and we motored the boat back to the ramp.

Lasron marine in Stockton Ca had one it was a 45 min drive to the dealer from the lake.

I found out that the stock nautique cable is 19 1/2 foot long and it cost's $400
The Teleflex cable you can use to replace the stock Nautique cable is 20 feet long and cost $220
After replacing the cable I can say the wheel just spinns now super easy. My stearing was not hard but after replacing my cable it seems like I have now have power stearing

back to your problem. My local dealer has one. The 20 foot teleflex its $220
you can call them at 408 379 0686 ask 4 jim

Im pretty sure you should be able to find one local but if not try them.

I ended up getting one through Whitlake for around $190.00 delivered. I also stopped by the Malibu dealership today to buy a new wakesurf board and found the mechanic that used to work for the Nautique dealership that closed in Boise is working there.

He told me my year is one of the easier to replace and shouldn't take more than a 1-1/2 hours.

I have a 98 air nautique and struggled for hours to get to the the connection at the rudder under the ballast tanks. Did I do something wrong?? I removed the seat, moved the gas tank forward removed the brackets but still had a super hard time unscrewing the assembly that attached to the rudder arm. I will be ordering a teleflex 20 foot cable and installing it in the next few days. I also attached a line and fished it through. Any suggestions going forward would be greatly appreciated.

I just picked up a new cable for $140 for my 98 Ski Nautique. It's a 20' cable so the loop at the dash will need to absorb the additional 6" but this should be no issue. I am using the TFXtreme cable, it really made a difference on my 211 when I installed it a couple years ago, much easier to turn than when new.

I installed mine last night. Took 3 hours but I also installed a new impeller and cleaned up the perfect pass wiring while I was installing the cable so it could probably be done in 2.

                Step by step:
                1. remove back seat completely
                2. remove center rear panel covering gas tank
                3. remove motor box
                4. remove center floorboard behind motor
                5. turn steering wheel full right then remove clevis pin from rudder arm using 9/16 wrench and 1/2 socket
                6. loosen large aluminum nut fixing the cable to the pivot sleeve at the rear
                7. pull cable out of sleeve and tie a rope on the loose end
                8. remove rack from helm by removing the 4 7/16 bolts
                9. push the rack up into the bow of the boat
                10. search for tie wraps holding the cable in place and cut them loose, mine had 3 - one at the rear motor mount, one at the helm, and the third just under the floorboard in front of the motor (which required removal of the water pump to access, hence the new impeller)
                11. pull the old cable out towards the dash
                12. hook the new cable to the rope and pull it back in from front to back
                13. re-install in pivot sleeve
                14. re-install rudder clevis pin
                15. push rack up into place and bolt it up to the helm

The 20' cable worked perfectly. The steering spins very free now. I will bring an allen wrench to re-center the steering wheel next time I go boating.

Negative on using an allen wrench. Those allen heads are just decorative.

You need to pop off the plastic center hub cover to reveal a large nut. I think it may be 3/4" socket. I used a deep socket but maybe a std socket is OK. Remove the nut and washer, pull steering wheel up off the spline, center and replace all.

You can also adjust the steering wheel clocking by where the aluminium tube is clamped back by the rudder. But you want to make sure the rudder turns approximately the same both ways.
