Cold Stat, Delayed Ignition

I have a 91 ski nautique with an electrinic ignition.
When the boat is cold i can crank it for ever and majically after a couple minutes it starts up.
I narrowed it don to an ingition issue. For the first several mnutes of a cold start i will not get any spark. then magically after a couple minutes i get spark. This has been happening consistently for some time now. When the boat is warm, it starts right up.

Does anyone know what could be causing this. Thanks for your help

Sounds like your choke is hosed. Are you sure you are actually not getting spark?

At first i thought it was a choke issue as well so i monkeyed with that. I know it is a spark issue.

I can put a test light on a wire and get nothing out of it for the first couple minutes of cranking it over. Than all of a sudden the light will go and the engine fires right up. It's just strange that it takes a couple mintes before the ignition wants to give me a spark.

One time i just turned the boat on without cranking the engine. Waited 5 minutes and then cranked it and it started right up.

Ground issue on the coil? Perhaps your module is going out, but I would think it is either good or bad, not intermittent.

I was hoping it is not the module. Does the boat have a coil? I'll look for one tomorrow but I thought there was no coil with the electronic ignition.

Every engine with a spark plug has at least one coil.

I believe it is the ignition module that after a few minutes of heating due to being energized ... corrects some defect present when cold. i.e. solder joint, chip connector, chip, etc.

Maybe this will help you. It is for the GT-40 engine, but the idea is the same. If your engine does not have a distributer, putting the ignition tester on a spark plug wire will work. It just will not spark as often.

It's a 91. It will have a disty, I would call SkiDIM or White Lake, and get a new module for the ignition. It is an easy part to switch and will in all likelihood fix your problem. They do fail. After you replace it, slap a timing light on that thing just to make sure everything is set properly.

I think you should get a little gold propeller or something when you achieve 1000 posts.
