Which code reader for a 98 GT-40 computer?

I would like to have a code reader for the computer on my GT-40 engine. Who makes the best, most user friendly code reader?

    Code Reader

I purchased the Star tester listed in the Gt-40 manual on this site. I found it on Ebay. I wrote about some of my experiences on the Gt-40, "lessons learned EFI GT-40 dated Aug 23. I reference two books that are very useful. They descibe using a volt meter with a needle and using it to read the codes. They also talk about using the STAR TESTER. I really like my Star Tester it does everything from Key on Engine off, to Key on engine on, and it can put the ECU into a test mode to check all the sensors. The GT-40 manual also explains how to test the ECU with the STAR TESTER. The STAR TESTER is made by Rotunda for FORD. The two books listed in my thread, are very useful in figuring out problems with our Fuel injected Ford motors.

      RE: Code Reader

Is there a specific model of the Rotunda Star Tester that will or will not work?

        tester

I have the super star tester. You need one that will work on the EEC-IV computers. They made one for the EEC-111, and that one will not work. The owners manual list the model number you want. The star tester you want has a black cord with a connecter and then a small pigtail.

Can one of you guys help me with a problem? Does the 2001 GT-40 have "computer" that a code reader can read. And, can a code reader test the sensors on this year engine. I.E. the MAP, Idle Air and the throttle position sensors.

The answer to your first question is yes there is a EEC-iv computer on your boat. The tester will check some of the sensors. If you download the Manual for the Gt-40 it will explain about each sensor and if it will send a error code to the computer if it is fautly. The manual will also explain how to test the MAP sensor with a vacuum gauge to see if it is working. Don't forget about the ECT and the ACT sensor. I replaced the MAP, IDLE and throtle for about $200 from NAPA. If I would have had the code reader, I could have saved some money and maybe my engine. It cost about $100 to take it to a Dealer and have them read the codes.

There are several aftermarket code readers available. Advance Auto, O'rielly's, etc sell some really inexpensive to read EEC IV (OBD1). Don't be mislead that the code reader will tell you what sensor to replace, far from it, it will tell you a general problem it's having but you have to do some electrical test to prove out the sensor. The PCM GT40 book is very detailed in diagnosis. Our late model car engines, 1996 on up, OBDII, EECV, etc., have very detailed codes that pinpoint a sensor fault. The EECIV computers are "dumb", you cannot look at live streaming data as you can with EECv, OBDII computers. The late model PCM chevy engines use a OBDII processor so you can use a laptop to check live streaming data.
