Impeller

Thinking about picking up a extra impeller to have on the boat. I will probably buy two and install one in the off season to learn how its done. How difficult is the replacement? Anyone been force to do it on the water?

I did a search and found information about a "run dry impeller" and some color impellers were better than others. Please make it easy for me, What impeller do I need for a 03 SAN 210 (PCM Excalibur 5.7L W/ 330 HP) and where is a good place to buy?

SkiDIM, or Whitelake.
I think you want 0713 on SkiDIM's site assuming you have a Vbelt engine.

Changing them is pretty easy. Some guys pull the whole pump out and it is really easy. If you remove the pump, make certain you put it back on correctly. I just do it on the boat and it is not difficult. Loosen the belt, three screws, remove and replace. Clean your gasket surface well.

The run dry and different colored ones apply to the Jabsco Ballast Puppy pumps, not your RWP.

It's not a hard job to change, as long as you have the tools it can be done just as easily on the water as it can be done on a trailer.

I have used my boat one day every weekend, I inspected the pump impeller recently and found it to be in pretty good condition with some wear on the blade tips. I reckon that the frequent use meant that the pump housing is always wet so drying up and the rubber blade not sticking to the pump wall prevents more aggressive deterioration. I would strongly suggest you replace the impeller once a year as a minimum and remove it completely if your boat stands for months at a time. Replacing an impeller is a small cost compared to what you would be in for if the impeller fins break off and get caught up in the coolong system.

I don't replace mine regularly. I do always have a spare on hand.

Every few years I will inspect, find no noticeable wear, and replace ust because i have it open.... Never had one go out. I never run my motor dry, and always store with AF in the block. This greatly reduces the chance of a failure.

Ran our first impeller 400+ hrs. It stayed in the RWP the whole time, with A/F in winter. I only replaced it because quinner gave me one he found from one of his old boats. Now I take the impeller out of the pump every winter, which allows me to inspect it and let the blades straighten back out so they don't "set". Our second impeller is going on about 250 hours now.

Do you pay attention to which direction you put it back in? ...the same, opposite, or don't care/know?

I put my impeller back in the way is was in the Spring. I pull the impeller after draining the the system and filling it with AF as the alcohol in the AF will cause the rubber to swell if you leave it soaking it for months on end...

Is your lake filled with Anti-Freeze, cos it's the lake water / sea water that enters the R/W pump impeller?
