    winterization question '98 super sport

Another winterization question that seeks clarification.

My 98 owner's manual is not as good as others. So I here I am looking at the 2001. The winterization procedures that I am looking at states that you "remove the block feed hose from the connection on the raw water supply pump"......then you elevate this hose up to poor the antifreeze into the block.

It appears that my water route goes through the v-drive before it returns to the thermostate housing. Could I remove the line from my v-drive, use a short hose to poor the anti-freeze into the block?

If I drained the lines to the v-drive, added some antifreeze to them, hook-up everything back to normal, I assume I could then stick the inlet to the stainer into a bucket of antifreeze, fire the motor up and watch the anti-freeze emerge from the exhaust, I would then be winterized in terms of the cooling system.

And yes, I would pull the plugs to drain the water before as first step to the above, so no dulition would take place.

    RE: winterization question

If you take the short hose off of the outlet side of the strainer, clamp a short length of the male end of a garden hose in there, and put that in the bucket of AF, you are pumping AF through everything. The strainer is the first safety net in your water cooling system. Everything else you need to worry about is after that.

      RE: winterization question

When I run the AF in the engine, I just loosen the hose that connects the thru-hull water scoop to the strainer at the thru-hull end, that leaves a a lot of hose for you to just stick into a 5 gal bucket filled with AF and then you can start up the engine and pull the AF throughout - basically like WakeSlayer said, but you just don't need the garden hose/clamp.

You can do it both ways. I do it like the manual says. I dont worry about getting any antifreeze into my vdrive or tranny cooler because I drain them completely. Doing it through the top feed hose will only fill the block. If you have a heater I recommend filling the core up also.

          couple of questions......

If I drained everthing, and poured the antifreeze into the block, I assume I fill till it takes no more, about one and one-half gallons?

Could I then pour antifreeze into each exhaust manifold.....any risk to overfilling? I assume its self regulating, any extra flows out the back when you reach its level capacity?

TH - It will just run out the exhaust, so it can't be overfilled. A couple gallons will do it. If you pour it into the hose that comes from the raw water pump, it will fill up the manifolds too.
