    RE: Winterize in Nor Cal???

I am sure there are tons of good reasons to winterize but I (nor my father) have never once winterized a boat in the last 36 years living with boats in the east bay (Nautiques since 1973). Last cold winter we had I did some temperature logging and came to the conclusion that I would not worry about freezing until the AVERAGE 24 hour temperature dropped below 25 degrees. I put AVERAGE in all caps because the temperature dropped down into the teens several times but came back up into the upper 30's and the motor compartment did not get get below 30 degrees under the hatch. I do not know anybody in the area who gives freezing a second thought when they keep their boats inside a garage.

My winter ritual is to start the boat once running off the garden hose on Xmas or new years. I let it run for 20 minutes or so just to boil any condensation out of the motor and fill all the tracts back up with lubricant. As a side note my 211 has never even needed a jump start or battery charge after sitting for 2-3 months. I also store my boat with a full tank of gas. Just don't push it first time out in the spring as the gas will have lost a little firepower from sitting for 4-5 months.

I'm stuck at a tradeshow in Vegas, boat is at home with no light under the hatch. Guess this will be a good test. Wife called this morning and told me the water service to the house had frozen for the first time ever. I am a little nervous, hoping for the best...

                Consider a Goldenrod. http://www.nationalmarineproducts.co...ifiers_s/5.htm

This is 150 degree low wattage heater wand usually used for dehumidfying, but works the same as a light bulb to warm up the engine compartment. The wand does not have the risk of breakage, etc. that comes with a light bulb. My dealer recommended it. Seems to work well, at least on a boat kept in a closed garage.

Ran the boat tonight, it's fine as I expected. Went ahead and let it get good and warm to vaporize any condensation and circulate the oil well. Put the droplight under the hatch so I am good to go.

Brian, thank you for the offer, I appreciate it. We need to have you guys over again soon, the boys are growing like weeds. They are at a very fun stage. Maybe we will make a drive up to Dbay sometime soon, they like little roadtrips.

running it on the flusher will not get 100% of moisture out of motor

it needs to be under a load

                      ur fine

it is when the temps drop to 25 degrees and stays there for over 24hrs

If you are storing your boat for more than a few weeks, I would still fully winterize it. Even if it does not get cold enough, you still want to change the oil, stabilize the fuel, fog the engine, and fill the engine with the pink RV Antifreeze for corrosion(biodegradable) and burst protection. My boat is in Pennsylvania, and stored in a garage that rarely gets below 40 degrees. I also remove the raw water impeller and take the tension out of the belts. I also take the battery out and charge it once a month.
