Dash board repair

Question, I have a '99 SNOB.

The dash is attached by 4 stainless thumb screws. The two on the top, closest to the windshield are good. However, the two on the bottom, close to the steering wheel are no longer holding due to cracking of the plastic around the holes the thumb screws go in. Either they were overtightend and cracked the plastic, or they have just vibrated or shook enough to crack it.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I may reinforce the plastic around the holes, making them strong enough to once again hold the thumb screws?

what about a stainless steal washer. that way it covers up the cracking.

I am using the largest stainless washers I could find(over an inch?) with a rubber o ring underneath it so the dash doesn't slip out from under the washer.
Maybe not perfect but it's been working better than without the o rings.

Thanks for the tips. I will try using a washer, maybe both on the top of and underneath the dash.

There are a few threads about it, do a search.

Mine is messed up on the bottom two holes also. I, too, use the washers. Someday I will take it out and fix it correctly.

Thanks Wakeslayer, that is what I was really looking for. Not ready for vinyl repair/replacement yet, but may try the fiberglass and resin by pulling the rubber stripping back and rolling back the vinyl.

Anybody know what type of elastomer the link is referring to? My dash needs repaired in the same place, but due to cigars, not rodents.
