I go with my friend's Supra and touch the elbow (Imar engine) to see how hot it is, it is warm only on normal speed and little bit hot when idling, the temparture on the elbow are "touchable by hand", but my GT-40's elbow temparture are not toughable any time,(even with a new raw pump and clear all water passage) from new to now, I knew it's too hot, are your guys have the same experience?

richard, I do not usually check the risers (elbows) when I am on the lake. I depend on the temp gauge. But I have checked them hooked to the garden hose in the driveway since the engine cover is open while it is running. They are very warm to the touch. If you are running hard, everything in your engine box can get pretty hot. If you are running in salt water, the insides of the manifolds and risers will corrode faster and may impede the water flow. If it has been a while since you replaced the gasket between the riser and manifold, you might tear it down and check it out and put new gaskets in.

if you are talking about the riser then you should be able to touch them all day long, if not you need to find the problem with the cooling system,
If you are refering to an elbow in the exhaust where a short piece of straight hose is attached to the riser then the elbow then corrigated hose to the transom then that elbow may get a little hot on the top side as it's going to get blasted by the hot exhaust and the water is going to let gravity do it's thing and only hit the lower section of the elbow, so if it is truely an elbow and not a riser which is attached to the exhaust manifold and is cast iron i wouldn't sweat it.

Richard - You may have a blockage in the manifold somewhere. See this thread:

elbow riser hot
SNobsessed guided a simillar case to me, I had cooled it with garden hose and the temp. much better on the elbow, so I can say flow volume is the main problem,I can sure my manifold and riser and oil cooler and v-deive no blockage internal because I had ckecked that all and even I change new manifold and riser and water pump, the elbow temp. don't feel good. so long time I have a hot elbow, but recently white smoke continuely come out exhaust, that , I know that is cause by high temp,(but not over heat) again I will check the pump water flow volume and the intake valve and let you know if I can get result.thanks for the inputs.

If your engine cools properly under the pressure of a garden hose but does not cool when it is in the water it may be worth repeating what others have posted at times: if any air is being pulled into the cooling system, the engine may not cool correctly. Check all hose connections and sea strainer cap (with proper rubber gasket) to ensure tight fits. Your engine may cool properly under the pressure of a garden hose since it forces water to the engine, but the engine may get hot when it must pull the water itself and it is pulling some air into the cooling system. My hose hookup allows excess water pressure to escape through the pickup on the bottom of the boat and the engine only pulls the water it needs.

I may be missing something here but the way I'm reading this is that he is comparing the temperature of an Indmar engine's risers to that on his GT40. This is like, pardon the expression, comparing apples to oranges. Unless I'm missing something, he has said that his engine is not overheating. Sounds like everything is working properly to me. Some may disagree with me but I know for a fact that it is not uncommon for one side or the other to be a little hotter than the other. This would not prompt me to start taking apart my manifolds. These are expensive parts and are labor intensive. If the manifolds aren't leaking, leave them alone, and please, please, please, don't compare a Nautique to a Supra. Just my two cents, now let the rebuttals begin.
