    1988 S. Nautique 2001 Maint./Exhaust Manifold Replacement?

Just recently purchased a 1988 2001 that has been in storage for eight years. Its in excellent condition, and good running condition. I know I will need to replace a few maintenace items. I was told that I would need to replance the exhaust manifolds. Is this accurate? If so any tips for replacing them, and I will run the boat in saltwater here and there, how often should I be replacing them? Any other comments on maintenace I should be giving attention while getting the boat back in tip top shape?

So it runs good and does not leak water out of the manifolds? I do not see why you would need to replace them if so. Flush it out real good when you do run it in salt or brackish water. How many hours on it? Was it run in salt a lot by the PO?

The ones on my '86 are in good condition and won't need replacing for quite some time... Of course it has never touched salt water, so if the PO spent anytime at all in saltwater and stored it without flushing it really well, then you might be due a new set.... It's a case by case kind of deal.

External leaks are not a problem. The problem comes after the manifolds rot out on the inside.

I had heard conventional wisdom says 3 years in salt even with flushing Rotting out from the inside causes water in the cylinders. Definately a no no

Thanks for the input. The boat has never seen saltwater before. My plans are to use it in freshwater with an occasional trip to salt and bracish water. I have heard the same about replacing every 3-5 in saltwater. The boat has 571 hours on it and has the original manifolds still installed. Any other items I should be concerned about at this point?

              Right.

What I was really asking, and perhaps I did not word that as well as I could have, Tim. Is whether or not there are leaks at all. Internal or external.

He said it is in excellent condition, and good running condition.

Is there something besides the fact that someone told you they needed replacing to make you think so? Plenty of boats that age, and far older that still have the originals in them.

No the boat runs well, a distant contact of mine whom works for PCM who has never seen the boat recommended that I replace them if they were original. I was inquiring to see if this is a popular thing to do, whch it seems like it is not, considering it has never been in saltwater, so it seems like its a judgement call. Other than removing the manifolds is there anyway to check the condition of the manifolds?

A PCM employee recommending you buy new boat parts? I take it you are new to boating.

I've got some GREAT lakefront property in west Texas for sale, if you are interested.

all you need to do is remove the manifolds and risers seperate the riser from the mainfold. take them to your local machine shop and have them dipped and cleaned. Paint them install new riser gaskets and exhaust gaskets and call it a day.

Since you plan on runing in salt every once in a while that will have a major effect on there future life and how long they will last, so flush after each use and plan for a replacements and a new engine in the futre, even thought your flushing it the salt will accelerate the aging process dramaticly.
