No power to my fuel pump on GT-40

I have a 1998 Sport Nautique with a GT-40.

I can't get it started. While talking to a mechanic at a Nautique dealer, he pointed me to the fuel pump to check to see if it's getting power. He said that if I turn the key to the on position, the fuel pump should vibrate. Since I wasn't getting any vibration, I disconnected the wire coupling to the fuel pump and tested it with my meter. I wasn't getting any power with the key in the on position. He suggested I put in a new starter solenoid which I did. Still no electricity to the fuel pump. I looked at the starter solenoid again and found a wire that's not connected. See the starter solenoid photo. Can anyone tell me if the purple wire in the photo is supposed to not be connected, or where it needs to be connected? Can anyone provide a diagram of which wires are to be connected to the starter solenoid?

A friend of mine suggested I try replacing the relay on the back of the engine. See the attached photo. I circled the relays in blue. I bought 1 relay and have tried it in both relay spots. Still no electricity to the fuel pump.

I can't answer the question on the purple wire, but how long has it been since the boat ran. Wires like that don't undo themselves. The purple wire in a nautique harness is always an ignition circuit. Have you checked your lanyard or kill switch and see if you have power there? This is where power is lost 90% of the time.

Both of the relays you circled in your first picture should have power at pin 30 of the relay socket anytime the battery is hooked up.

If both relays do not have power, you need to solve that problem.

In your case, you just need to get the fuel pumps running. See if you can make the fuel pumps run by making the electrical connection in my post.

There is a fuse at your battery terminal that you need to check. Even if the fuse is not blown, chances are the housing is a mess and carroded. I have had to replace mine on my '98. If this fuse is not making good contact, the relays will not work, and therefore the fuel pump will not spin up when you turn the key on.

Thanks for your ideas, guys. A few questions:

gunnin4six - are you talking about an inline fuse connected to the positive side of the battery terminal in the front of the boat? There's a wire up there that goes to the relays?

DanielC - To test power at pin 30, do I put the positive wire from a meter in pin 30 and ground the meter's black wire? Will I need to turn the key to the "on" position? Or do I need to try to start it?
Also, question regarding your TestPortFuel.jpg: can I use a regular wire - putting one end in the computer's test connection as shown and ground the other end? Or does it have to be a special wire like you have shown in your jpg. If so, what is that wire and where would I get one?

bchesley - My boat hasn't run for 2 months now. Egads! I found the disconnected purple wire 2 weeks after I put in a new starter solenoid. Either I didn't take good notes before I disconnected the old solenoid or the disconnected wire was hidden. DOES ANYONE HAVE A DIAGRAM THAT SHOWS WHICH WIRES NEED TO BE CONNECTED TO THE STARTER SOLENOID?

I'd appreciate answers to my questions. I'll be working on the problem again on Sunday. I'll let you know what I find out.

Pin 30 on both relays should have power all the time. Even with the boat keys in the house on the kitchen table. The boat does not need to be on, nor do you need to try to start it. This should be full battery voltage. Red meter lead, in pin 30 on the relay socket, black meter lead, grounded, both relays.
If you have power at both relays, grounding the connection shown on the test port causes the fuel pumps to run continuously with the key on. This can be done with a plain wire.

A friend of mine told me to run wires directly from the battery to the fuel pump to test it and see if it's working. Tomorrow, I'm going to try all the things you and others have told me. I'm suspecting that I need to call Natique corporate to get a wiring diagram for the starter solenoid. I suspect I might have reconnected the wires wrong when I put in the new one - RATS! Hopefully, after I get through these items, I'll finally be able to get the boat started again. Keep your fingers crossed.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

I ran all the other tests you guys recommended and tried the fuse last. It was the corroded fuse near the battery terminal!! HALLELUJAH!! You guys have been soooo much help. My son in the Marines comes home for Thanksgiving and we'll now be able to go to the lake. I'm very grateful to you.
