You may want to PM Jody Seal on this issue, to see if he has any insight? It sounds similar to the early incarnations of the GT-40 ('97 versions), that tend to race before settling to idle. To solve this, a newer ECM will solve the problem. I'm not sure there is an updated ECM to solve your issue? You do have one of the earliest versions of PCM EFI, and quite a bit of tweaking was done in subsequent years to truly get it "right". I hate to admit it, but MC/Indmar really forced the others to scramble back then.

Looking for some knowledge on the 1993 Ford 351 offerings. According to the 93 PCM engine manual there were 2 versions of the Ford 351, a 240 hp and a 280hp version. Anyone know which one I have? All I know is it's a ford 351 carb with protec electronic ignition (no fuel injection). I have seen pictures of other 93 carb motors with a small square plastic engine hood that says PCM 5.8 on it. Others have this bigger plastic engine hood and say PCM 5.8 HO. Mine has the larger engine hood like the 5.8 HO but with a sticker that just says PCM power plus. Could be a 5.8 HO with just a replacement sticker? I see Nautique parts sells this exact sticker. What you guys think I got here?

If you have the HO you'll have GT40s heads which have a three bar marking on them if you search you can find details on what exactly they look like.

Ok so for 1993 PCM had the Ford 351 WITH GT40 heads @ 280hp and WITHOUT GT40 heads @ 240hp? Did the plastic engine cover and sticker indicate this head difference then? Was that why I'm seeing the small square plastic cover and the larger engine cover? Looks like from
below pics the regular non HO 5.8 had the smaller square engine cover with regular distributor type ignition while the HO 5.8 had the protec electronic ignition with larger engine cover? Does this seem correct to assume?

No. The larger shroud came over the protec ignition which was common on both standard and HO offerings.

Heads were the primary difference between them. The engine tag should tell you which you have, or the markings on the heads themselves.

Ok thanks. That makes sense. So I have the larger shroud because I have the protect ignition and that larger shroud is used to cover the protect ignition components (I think that's what you meant by "shroud comes over protection ignition"). The shroud sticker I have just says PCM power plus and doesn't mention HO anywhere so I'm maybe I have the regular heads with protec ignition. So the 240hp motor not the 280. I'll check the heads when I get home. Thanks.

Confirmed only 2 bar heads. So the PCM power plus sticker makes sence now. It's not a HO pro boss PCM Ford motor its the lesser hp 351. These were rated at 240hp? Thanks for the help, just wanting to understand what Iv got here. I understand the protec ignition can become problematic over time and need to be swapped out for a distributor type ignition system sold by skidim and NP. Looking at the protec I see it incorporates some safety features tied into oil pressure and water temp that I'm assuming activates the red alarm light on the dash in addition to limiting engine rpm. Are these alarm signals and reduced rpm lost when going to the replacement distributor type ignition?

I hate to reply to an old thread, but I have a follow up question to this thread. When did the problematic ProTec ignition end? I have a 1996 5.8 HO ProBoss (Sport Nautique). It should NOT have ProTec, correct?

Does it have a regular distributor with plug wires?

                              If so, no ProTec.

If not, well, you can always swap it out when (not if) it dies.

I only spend about 15 mins looking at the engine for the first time 2 weeks ago. The spark plug wires are missing. I don’t have a great zoomed out pic of the block but there is part of what looks like a white dizzy. See pics...
