    Putting GT40 heads in 85 2001?

I have a 1985 2001 and I am thinking about changing out the original heads with the GT40 heads. I understand you gain about 40-50HP ( is this accurate?). I also understand though if you can find some of the 351 heads from the 69-70 era that they are actually better (true?). The only change you have to make with the GT40 heads is a timing adjustment, is this true with the 69-70 heads. Also, where is the best place to get a deal on the GT40 heads? Any info is helpful.

    Thanks

I think the idea is to get them from Ski-dim because they are pre-drilled for the right bolt diameter. You can get them from other sources but you have to widen the bolt holes to fit. I haven't heard anything about the timing. I thought the GT40 heads were just better breathing. That is an old engine to be hammering new HP into though, just imo.

I think the ski dim suggestion is a good one. Don't worry about adding horsepower to an old motor. Seasoned blocks are often preferred by dragracers. If you are going to pull the heads you should go ahead and do a light rebuild. At minimum hone the block, new rings, new cam, lifters, and new rod bearings. Oh yeah, replace the oil pump too.
