30W Heavy Duty Non-detergent motor oil for V-Drive

I have a 03 SAN and I am about to reach 100 hours on it. I need to change the engine oil, transmission fluid, and v-drive oil. I have everything I need except for the 30W Heavy-duty non-detergent oil for the V-drive. I can't find it anywhere. Any of you guys change your on V-drive oil? If so, where do you find the oil? Thanks for your help.

I'd recommend NOT using the 30W oil in your V-Drive. The 2003 PCM Owner's Manual shows that you should be using Dexron III ATF, not 30W oil.

UPDATE (10/15/2004): This information has been determined to be a MISPRINT in the PCM Manual. Only 30W Heavy-Duty Motor Oil should be used in Walters V-Drive Units!

You are correct Jeff, but the Walter's V drive info that came with my boat shows using 30W HD non-detergent. I called the dealer and they said you should use the 30W also. So what is correct.

Hmmm... Interesting. I suppose we should go with what Walters recommends, since they built the V-Drive units. I think I'll give CC a call and find out what they recommend. I'll post the results in a minute.

I just spoke with Stephanie at Correct Craft. Their technical specialist is out of the office today, but he'll be calling me tomorrow with the information we're looking for.

Thanks Jeff. I just spoke with PCM and they told me that I should call Correct Craft. They said that they could not make a recommendation regarding the V-drive. I told them that their manual makes a recommendation but they said I should still call correct craft. Strange huh. I know one the guys that works for PCM, I may see him on the lake this weekend. I will ask him what gives. Until then, I will wait and see what Correct Craft tells you. Thanks for your help

Could be the V-drive is not a PCM product, hence the reluctance to recommend. :roll:
BTW, should find 20w or 30w at Pep Girls or Autozone, which is where I bought mine.

The vdrive is not manufactured by PCM. I have changed the oil in many vdrive units and I use the same oil that I use for the engine. Hope this helps. There are some issues with the owners manuals. There were some issues with how to winterize ballast tanks as well.

here at swcc we use hd-30w motor oil. we just use the shelf brand such as quaker state or castrol. i've never heard of using atf in a walter v-drive.

Your correct. It is a Walter's V-drive but as Jeff posted they do recommend Dexron in their owners manual. I asked a friend at skidim to see what he could find out and he spoke with someone at PCM who said to use 30W HD. I guess the non-detergent part that the Walter's booklet states is not that important. I don't know. I just did not want to do anything to mess up my baby. Thanks for the help guys.

I just heard back from Stephanie at Correct Craft. She said that the Technical Specialist has reported that we should be using the 30W oil, not the Dexron III. They do recommend, however, that you look at what is in the unit, and use whatever is currently in your V-Drive. Obviously, if it is red, it is Dexron III. Mine has 30W oil, so I will continue to use that. I assume this is just a misprint in the PCM manual.
