Oil for Excaliber 330

For the Excalibur (5.7):
Under 50 degrees, use 5W-30.
Above 50 degrees, use 15W-40.

The questionable part about this recommendation (and this has ALWAYS been a question I have asked PCM since they put out this spec many years ago), is that there is no GF-4/SM rating for the 15W-40 weight of engine oil. There never has been. That rating just doesn't exist for that weight of oil. Their response has always been to just use any good 15W-40 oil.

NautiqueJeff - there are 15w-40 oils that have the automotive rating. She’ll rotella Dino 15w-40 had the automotive and diesel spec, but when they switched to the newer synthetic formulas (T6) it lost the automotive rating. I switched to Delo brand 15w-40 Dino oil that was SN rated while I still had my 196 with the excal engine.

is your point that there isn’t an oil with both of the gas and diesel specs they list? I just ignore the diesel rating given it’s a gas engine.

I bought the Shell Rotella dino just to be safer (vs the newer synthetic) but don't see any automotive ratings on there. Only diesel per my pic. Hopefully it's fine per NautiqueJeff


EDIT: Maybe it's not dino. I went T4 instead of the T6 (which is labeled as full synthetic). The shell website says "T4 Triple Protection 15W-40 uses a proprietary, synthetic blend formula exclusive to Shell." So no idea if that counts as synthetic or dino. Confusing.

T4 is a synthetic blend. I used it for years on the previous 2 boats on my journey from straight Rotella to T6 the last 2 years.

The issue with these oil threads is that many tend to over think their oil needs/requirements then throw a Fram filter on their boat. The filter is probably as important if not more important in some cases than the oil. That's where the real discussion should be...... (BTW, if you didn't catch it I'm mostly joking here and just trying to stir up another 3 pages for this thread)

I'm sure you'll be fine with what you've chosen to go with.

I use Mobil 1 15w50 in my 330 Excalibur and shockingly it hasn't exploded on me.
