Oil change on 2003 SANTE 210

I had the dealership (buxton) winterize the boat and put all hoses back so in the spring all i had to do was an oil change. My question is what type of oil do you use for the excaliber 330. They recommend 5 quarts 15w-40 for diesel engines (valvoline). Also, when i take it down to the lake, hopefully this weekend and run a check on everything i have the following To Do Checklist.
-transmission fluid
-vdrive fluid
-water strainer
-hose leaks

Can you make any suggestions on what else to check.

I use Royal Purple 15w40....while everyone says "oh, PCM does recommend synthetics." I've used it in everything from generators to big CAT-diesel powered box trucks with great results. I won't use anything but RP, period.

But I'm sure any name brand 15w40 that meets the specs will suffice, just change every 50 hrs. And pick a good filter, K&N or Wix.

If this is your first outting, I would keep a close eye on the temp gauge. Personally I would change the impeller, but thats just me, I change it every spring.

Watch the alternator output (voltage meter), make sure you are charging (13+ Volts) after 20-30 min the volts should drop below 13v if the battery is good.
Dealer is corect about oil, always use 15W-40W, yes that is what most disels use, Shell Rotella is OK too!

Your oil should of been changed last fall. This is why.
When an engine is run, it produces combustion byproducts, some of which are acidic. These get in your oil. Some unburnt gasoline also gets past the piston rings, and also ends up in the oil. You can also bet that an engine burning any hydrocarbon fuel is making water while it is being ran. All this junk sits in your crankcase over the winter, and it is definitely worse for your motor than clean oil, even with a winters accumulation of condensation, that is just distilled water.

You need to find out if your motor has a roller lifter camshaft, or a flat tappet camshaft. If you have a flat tappet camshaft, you must use an oil that has a high amount of a Zinc/Phosphorus additive, usually listed as ZDDP.

It is your boat, but I would not choose a motor oil based on a colored dye they put in it.

I do not know about K&N oil filters, but I do know a lot of people think their air filters are "better" because they flow more air. They also flow more dirt, that is how they get the air flow higher.

When remote filter mounts for spin on filters were first introduced, they settled on using a Ford filter. I do not know why, they just did. The correct filter for the remote mount is a Motorcraft FL1-A. You can get them at Walmart for less than $4.00.

The crankcase oil capacity with a new filter is 4 Quarts on the 5.7L 5 Quarts on the 6.0L (check your PCM engine manual on page 52 for clarification). I used Rotella 15W-40 on my last oil change since that is what the previous owner recommended, although I'm sure you could get by with any brand just fine. Check your FCC filter, it is a pain to get off the first time with the clamp style after you do it once it is pretty easy maintenance to tackle each season.
