    HELP needed with SAN210-08

If you have any idea of what this might be, please post...

Metallic sound from engine or transmission on my
    Nautique SAN 210 MY 2008.
After load up the engine/ transmission e.g. in a wakeboard pull, and the wakeboarder have fall or released the line followed by a fast cut of the gas done by the driver there will be a sound coming from the engine, transmission compartment. The sound are there every time when the gas / speed decrease with gear engaged down to idling or just above that. The sound only occurs when gear is engaged. The sound occur every time and most noticeable when coming from load down to no or little load on the propeller axle. It sometimes occurs when engaging the gear from idling engine and then just cruising with idle speed. The sound disappear when going up in speed with gear engaged, at least it is no longer noticeable in this case however it is possible that the engine noise level makes the sound to drown. The sound tend to increase both in occurrence and in level so I am concern that whatever causes it will break, just a matter of time. The sound is highest when listening from the hatch to water cut of valves. The Vdrive Gear/and the transmission box reach temperature that it is not possible to hold your hand on it.

    Description of sound:
Metallic sound like coming from Gear teeth that are not aligned "to much space in between" hit each other back and forward. Loaded axel -> not loaded-> loaded and so on…. If it is something like this I do not know. However if it is then it will wear out the gear teeth and finally destroy it.

Mine did the same thing; it's covered under warranty. I can't remember what my dealer told me but I think it was a plate between the motor and tranny. Motorcraft warranted the items, so take it in.

Also a friends 2008 210 was doing the same thing.

I heard mine mostly when after you put it in forward while at a low idle, you would hear a metal grinding sound after about 10 seconds in forward.

Had the same vibration......it's some plate from the engine to the tranny. PCM covers it under warranty as it seems to be a problem. Only bad part is they have to pull the motor to put it in. Good part is you get a free tranny fluid change

I think it's the damper plate--I just had mine replaced under warranty on my 08 SAN 210. My dealer said PCM recognizes it as a known problem within a range of serial numbers, but that his PCM rep told him they've also seen it outside that range.

The damper plate is a plate attached to your flywheel with springs in it that helps absorb the shock of going into gear. If one of the springs is defective or otherwise not seated properly), it can rattle. As you load up the engine, you also load up the damper plate and the sound stops. And, if it doesn't stop, it'll get masked by engine noise.

On my boat, the noise was very noticeable from idle to about 6-7 mph and then disappeared. It was VERY irritating and is now gone...and I have my sanity back...lol.

The fix is a major job....and much bigger on a v-drive than direct drive because access is more difficult. My dealer said he did it w/o pulling the motor, though that's how it's usually accessed. He said he was able to detach the v - drive and slide it far enough forward to R&R the plate.

Good luck! My dealer had the boat for two months--allegedly waiting most of the time for approval from PCM and CC + the time to get the parts. But I know my boat sat for two weeks before my dealer even bothered pressing CC on the issue, so I think my dealer is simply slow. Another dealer I know told me he thought he'd have had the boat finished in a week or two.

Let me know if you need more details...

I have the same problem on my '09 210. Every time i put it in gear I hear a rattle sounds and as soon as I speed up it goes away. It's driving me nuts!

My '09 came from the factory with the same issue. My dealer noticed it when he was doing a water test before I picked it up. He fixed it quickly when I brought it back for the 20 hour service.
