    Key Pad Bypass

Last year we had an issue where our 2006 206 would not start. Turned out to be the teather switch. Anyway it got me to thinking that I need a bypass for the Keypad if it were to go bad if nothing else just to get it off the lake. Has anybody made one and if so how?

    Keypad Bypassed

I have just done this on my 2001 SN after my keypad failed. I have been able to repair my keypad with some rework on the printed circuit board (PCB). As a precaution I have wired in a bypass, its a 3 position key switch mounted on the side console, OFF/ON/START and wired directly to the battery so it also bypasses the Bilge Pump OFF/ON/AUTO switch which can also fail and leave you stranded. The ON circuit powers the Ignition Run Purple wire and START powers the Yellow/ Red wire next to it for the starter motor. Only draw back with the keypad out of circuit is that the radio on the ACC circuit does not power on, nor will the Blower or Horn as switch is out of circuit, but hey! the engine starts and runs! I will post a photo after the weekend.

      Something else

I did not bypass the safety switch!! That could still leave me stranded but at least the boat can't get away from me!

The last couple of times I've taken the boat out it has taken awhile before it will start/ fire. Like there is no
grunt or anything and then just like that, bam it's running. The only theory I have is I'm turning my pergo switch off and it's taken the computer a few minutes to
        boot up. Thoughts?

Thanks, I am thinking I will purchase a ten pin plug and wire a keyed ignition switch in a box to it. If needed I would remove the boat wiring at the engine harness and plug in my temporary harness. This would also take the boat computer and gauges out of the circuit to avoid damaging them. I think all I will use is 3 wires.
1, Battery from the engine harness
2,Ignition from the swich to the purple/white wire of the harness
3, Start position on the switch to the yellow/red wire of the harness.

I know I will not have any gauges etc. but it would get the boat back on a trailer.

          Does this seem right?

The way I am planning to do this the tether switch will not be in the circuit. I'm not saying its right but I have never used it on any of my boats anyway (don't know anyone that does), but if you do thats great and we all probably should.

This will not work as your engine requires the ECM (computer) to be powered in order to run. Powering the purple ign may power the ECM but you will also need battery power, which you could get with a lead from your box to the battery but this would be messy! I think my solution is easier and well engineered. Will post a photo soon. Cheers Greg

                Second thoughts

I apologise...your solution will work as you do have a BAT feed in the engine harness and therefore an elegant solution with the plugin key box. Cheers Greg

Please post pictures and materials list of the bypass. I have been told I am a bit of a "glass half empty type of a guy" but I consider it prudence not to be caught with no way to get back to shore
                  Thanks

I will, it will probably be next week. Another benifit to this is if you do your own work you can bypass all but the engine controls to isolate a problem in the time it takes to loosen a hose clamp and switch a plug.

The "bypass" works great on my boat, however a friend of mine owns a Nautique dealership and we made one for him also. The plug on a 2008 is differant. I think a 2007 is the same as my 2006(could be wrong about this). The bypass fits nicely in a small tackle box I keep in the boat.

The switches I already had, the plastic box is a project box from Radio Shack $4.00, the plug is the expensive part I think about $60.00 from PCM. The plug came with about 16 inches of wire on it, wired it to the switch and shrink tubed the wires. Drilled holes and mounted in the box.

If I didn't have the ignition switches I would have used a spst and momentary contact switchs.
