Enqine oil question

My manual says to run 15w-30 and I can't find it anywhere. I ride on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH and only run b/w June and Sept. Do I need to run 15w-30 or can I run another grade? I'd appreciate any thoughts on this topic. Thanks!

Based on your profile, I see you have a 2003. The PCM manual actually recommends 15W-40. Most people use Shell Rotella diesel oil (or equivalent that also meets SJ specs).

I'm not an engine guy so I called Correct Craft. They told me it is a 5.7L 330hp Chevy Blovk motor that runs a Ford oil filter.... go figure. The tech in Orlando recommended the Pennzoil PZ-1 filter, which is no longer made, and 4.5qtz of 15w-30. I was able to buy a case of the PZ-1 filters on ebay but haven't had the same luck with the oli.

The manual that come with my boat was for a 2005 and my boat is an 03. I called the factory, they are very helpful, for advice and they said 15w-30. If there is no difference, I'll use something else.

They should not have recommended 15W-30. That is not correct. Go by what the manual says.

The filter they recommended is fine. The reason that your GM engine uses the Ford style filter is that it uses what's known as a filter relocation kit. If it didn't have this installed, changing your filter would be much more difficult due to the location of the filter on the engine. All of the filter relocation kits use the Ford style filters.

Any filter matching the Motorcraft FL-1A filter specs is fine. Most people do try to avoid FRAM filters due to poor design though.

Thanks for the link and the advice. My local dealer is less than "top notch." After a year of their service, I've been doing everything myself. The manial will be a big help.

anyone have a link to instructions for using the quick drain oil system? and where is the hose attached? i don't even know if i have one.

You will need to take the plastic cover off the top of the engine (3 plastic nuts on the top), the drain line will be on the right hand side (if you are facing the rear of the boat) between the air intake and exhaust header likely clipped onto a metal tube or something else that it can't let go of and get tied up in your belt while running (the tube will likely have a brass cap and the said clip attached to it, you can't miss it). Just unclip, but don't undue the bolt yet. Fish hose back behind/beside the water pump and alternator and feed it into your drain hole in the boat. Pretty easy, just make sure you clip in back via the same way you took it out and you will be fine.

Some tips I've read on this drain system.

1) Get motor hot before draining (I took a couple friends to a local lake for an afternoon of running and mine came out pretty quickly).
2) I raised and lowered my boat to make sure the whole pan drained out during the process using the front jack. Not sure if this helped but it gave me something to do while waiting.
3) I've seen a couple post on here that say to prime the oil filter prior to installation. I didn't do this the first time, but will next time.
4) I used a plastic milk jug to catch my old filter when I removed it. Just cut out the top portion of a jug leaving the handle in tact and this should save you from having to clean up the spilled oil.

As far as oil goes I have a 05' 196 and I'm running Shell Rotella T 15w-40 and a Napa filter.

The Pennzoil PZ-1 is the same filter as a Fram Extra Guard and should be avoided. There are much better filters available. I use Shell Rotella 15w-40 and a Napa 1515 filter.

Is the cap and rotor for the PCM motor (5.7) any different than for the chevy 5.7 truck motor? Is it better sealed or anything?
