Truck/Trailer issues, locking brakes in reverse

***not sure where this post should go if its in the wrong place feel free to move it***

So 90% of the time this isnt an issue, I have a 2005 SANTE and a 2004 toyota both with 5 prong tow hook-ups, unfortunately sometimes I only have access to the 1994 suburban which is only wired for 4 prong electical towing. Which means I have indicators and brakes, but no control over the brakes in reverse on the trailer. So this weekend I got stuck by myself at the gas station having to reverse out on an incline in the suburban, trying to use the stupid little pulg (which kept falling out). Frustrating beyond belief.

I'm sure some of you have experienced similar situations and I am wondering how hard it is to convert an old 4 part trailer hook up to a 5? I looked under the suburban and there is no 5th to add on, but because it invloves reverse, I'm thinking I could just add it one of 2 ways...
    1. Run wires back to the column and go off my reverse.
    2. Spice right into my tail light reverse lightbulb wiring.
Anyone know about doing this- I'm not getting stuck with that little plug again! I'd prefer option #2, mostly because it'd be way easier and involve way less wire. Also wondering if I'd need to run a seperate ground or if the ground on the light/trailer hookup is enough, thanks everyone.

You can either turn the burban into a 5-pin connector which can be found at your local auto parts. Splice the extra wire into your reverse lights. OR I believe if you need to back up you can just flip the connector over and then turn your headlights on to get power to the "reverse lockout" wire on the boat trailer...don't forget to jump out and flip back over when done!

you can def. just flip the harness over, but go to walmart and get a 5 prong

I wired a 7 way plug end onto my trailer. I don't know anyone with a 5way plug and I didnt want to get stuck not being able to tow my boat in the event something happened to my truck.

im noticing very few people know what thier talking about

its a common problem, all u have to do is put a nickle between the break pin and the trailer. its the lil slot about a foot back on the tounge where a nickle looks like it could be placed. but you want to remove it when ur not using it cuz its for safety

seriously, all you need is a nickle

put a nickle in the slot on the tounge, and then place tape over it, so the break pin can not slide backwards engaging the breaks as your reverse.

You need to add a wire from the backup lights of your vehicle into the harness assembly, and replace your 4 prong plug with a 5 prong.
Some vehicles have a quickconnect for the harness, and you may be able to order a 5 prong harness and just snap in the new one.

You should still be able to connect a four prong trailer into the 5 prong adapter on the truck.
