Ballast Impeller - Need to replace ?

Should impellers on ballast pumps be replaced on any routine basis like on the engine water pump? I assume if these break up the parts would likely just collect in the bottom of the ballast tanks. Fairly easy to clean out (unlike finding bits of engine water pump impeller) and very unlikely to cause further problems anyway. If they got sucked back in to pump when emptying would likely just pass to lake?

I have never replaced mine, going on my 5th season, but I do keep spares in the boat. I believe when they go out they spin out the hub, not really break up.
