    teak refinishing

    Hi Fellow PN Members

I have seen many discussions on the best way to refinish your teak platform. I have a 2002 SANTE and got a beautiful finish on my platform. Here is what I did

    1) Sanded the platform starting with 80 grit and went all the way to 160 Grit right down to bare wood making sure i got all the grey out of the grain of the wood

    2) shop vacuumed all the dust out of all the cracks

    3) Applied starbright golden teak oil (8 Coats). I brushed on the oil for each coat and let it sit for 15 minutes before wiping it down with a rag. I waited 24 hours between coats. (I dont believe in using the teak cleaner, if you have the time nothing works better than sanding down to the natural wood).

    Below are some pics.

I know what you mean. I love teak. I oil it every other week or so to keep it clean. It literally only takes me 10 minutes to drop on a quick coat. I much prefer the natural teak to fiberglass. Just a question of personal taste i guess.

Looks great! A good friend told me once how well it works when you rub it on with your bare hands. I've had much better luck doing it that way as opposed to when I used to brush it on. I don't use nearly as much oil either.

          Teak Ahhhhh!

That looks really great. I redid mine with the cleaner, sandpaper then teak oil until it quit soaking it up. Now All I have to do is touch up every time I take it out. takes about 5 minutes.

I'm resurrecting an old post here, but thought I would share my first attempt at refinishing my teak platform. My platform was in pretty good shape, so I elected to forego the sanding and rather did the three-step starbrite application. I spent a lot of time on the first step of cleaning and was surprised by how much "tarnish" came off. Here are the results of each step and the final result after only two coats. I plan to apply more as the wood absorbs the oil over the next few days, but here is what it looks like so far.

            I have photos showing:
            1.) before the restore
2.) after applying the cleaner and scrubbing with a nylon brush
            3.) after applying the brightener
4.) after 2 coats of oil

Does anyone power wash before oil?

I have had very good results with a stiff bristle brush and lots of water, just finishing up mine, it likely hadn't been oiled for years and was quite dirty and gray... I'm about 5 applications of teak oil in now

I am reviving this thread. I am clearing up my platform and getting ready for the season. I used the Starbrite kit four years ago with great success. Since then I have just oiled the platform once or twice a year. The cleaner and brightener didn’t seem as effective this time around. They have been stored in my headed basement for four years. Do they go bad?

I think with a light sanding with 120 grit and elbow grease and another application of cleaner and brightener I will get to where I want to be.

Go east on the sanding. Teak is very soft and I’ve seen aggressive sanding expose screws. Once the teak is clean, apply the teak oil in several coats. I agree that the StarBright product is very good. Apply several times throughout the year and you may never have to sand again.
