How to set Ignition timing GT 40

I am putting a new motor in my 2000 Air Nautique. what is the best way to drop the distributor in the motor so it will start easy? I have the electronic manual for the PCM GT 40 but is the a motor manual? Also whats the firing order?

Easy. Pull the #1 spark plug, put your finger over the spark plug hole and rotate the crank of the engine with a socket/breaker bar to TDC on the balancer. If you feel the pressure escaping around your finger as you reach tdc, then you are at TDC of cylinder 1. If you don't, continue rotating another 360 degrees to the next time TDC comes up. Once you are at TDC of 1, rotate the motor backwards to 5 degrees before TDC(BTDC). Next, align the rotor in your distributor so that it points to #1 in the cap and drop the distributor in and seat it in the cam gears. Lock it down pointed at 1. After you start the engine, pull the spout plug(little 2 wire plug on the harness leading to the distributor) and advance the throttle in nuetral to 1000rpm. Read your timing on the balancer with the timing light and adjust as necessary by rotating the body of the distributor until you are dead on 5 degrees BTDC. Then lock the distributor back down. We set the timing on the distributors of engines we build all the time this way. You should be within a degree or so this way when you first crank it up.

Dont forget to pull the gray spout out before final timing set or your timing will bounce all over the place while trying to read the timing marks with the timing light.

Oh, and also don't forget to put the spout plug BACK in when you are done. Otherwise, the computer has no control over the distributor and you'll be at 5 degrees advance all the time.
