Bow Seat Backrest Removal - 2003 SAN

    Hey guys,
I'm trying to remove the backrest for the bow seating in my 03 SAN for cleaning and speaker replacement.

I did some research here on the process before attempting removal last night. I though I had it worked out, but seems not.?

So far I have removed 2 x screws on the port side under the windscreen area, another 2 x screws in front of the driver, and 1 double nut arrangement at the front. I have felt around as much as I can reach behind the cup holders but there are no fixings here (except for the grab rail).

I understand that you have to lift it at the cabin end to pop it out of the locating clips.? I lifted it as much as I dared last night but it wouldn't budge.?

I don't think I missed any screws, but I will double check - it's pretty busy with wires, ducts, and the subwoofer behind the drivers kick pannel.

    Thoughts.?

In my 02 there were more than 2 screws fastening the area near the windshield. I know the drivers side had at least 3 screws under the dash. They run across the area just under the windshield from the aisle to the hull. If I remember correctly, there were 2 screws under the passenger seat and 4 under the dash.

On the cupholder nuts, I would guess that they are there you just arent getting to them. The fiberglass is pretty flimsy, and if there was no fastener in the area it would be obvious because the seatback would not sit flush.

I will get some pictures to you later tonight

You're missing the nuts right in the center of the grab rails. I know it seems impossible to get up there behind the cupholder mold, but its doable, barely. I reached it with a 7/16" open ended wrench, some crazy arm and body contortions, a lot of patience, and many deep breaths.

Another thought, if your plastic cup holder molds are cracked or in bad shape, I think they are about $130 for the set. You could just rip those out and put in a new set -- but double check with your dealer on pricing/availability before you rip those out. There are two screws holding those in that cannot be removed until the bowrest is pulled, unless of course you install a new set, you can just rip those out.

I also had one more set of wood screws in the corners, near the forward tower base. Those are relatively easy to get to.

Ok so I had another quick look last night, but it was a bit too dark to really get into it.

Seems that there is 2 more screws on the port side (under the screen area) that are behind the factory amp mounting board. I can't see any way to get to these.? Any ideas.?

Also seems that there is another (3rd) screw on the starbord (driver) side. I haven't been able to find / get to this screw yet due to all the wires / ducts, and the factory subwoofer that I have to shift to get my hand in.

        Go Big,
I can get my hand all the way up there (just) thru the locker (no esky on the port side) and there is nothing there.? I can only feel the 2 x nuts that hold the grab rail, but I'm sure that's all the nuts in that area.?

On my '99, you have to lift the backrest cushion up off the clips (after all the screws are removed).

I'll take a pic of my bow tonight and notate on the pic where my fasteners are located. I just reinstalled mine in late April. I wouldn't imagine that we'd have different fastener locations (same year/model)...but who knows....odd.

Here are pics of the location of my fasteners for the bow backrest. The annotation is somewhat crude, but quick. Nonetheless, it is relatively accurate. Let me know if you need anything else...hope this helps!

I had some time yesterday, so I had another look (feel). Found the nut above the cup holders. I don't know how I missed them the first time.! They actually weren't that hard to reach if you pulled the bottom of the cup holder slightly to get your arm up there.

I had to remove the factory amp mounting board on the port side to get to two of the four screws on that side. On the driver side I also removed the factory sub woofer to reach the last screw. from memory there were three screws on this side.

                Thanks for the pics GoBig.

With my Super sport which should have the same large rear wrap around seat, you just pull up on the centre of the seat and it will release from the aluminum brackets its resting on. There are 3 brackets, one in the middle and 2 on the sides.
