I have a bad feeling that using 5200 was the wrong choice. I finally found the source of water leaking into my 96 Supersport. The bad area is the under the rear rub rail - where the outer hull is sealed to the inner hull. Its at the level of the swim platform, so it drops below the waterline a fair bit and takes on a decent amount of water. A fair sized chunk of factory sealant had broke away - maybe about an inch of it. I cleaned it up, and stuffed a bunch of 5200 into the gap from inside the boat, and the outside. Applying this stuff on the outside was a major pain because I had gravity working against me - The inner hull overhangs the outer, so the sealant is applied from the bottom up and under the lip. Its pretty much impossible to fill all the air spaces up there and not have it drip out the bottom. I held it up with some masking tape, but removed it after 24 hours for fear it would never cure.
This may have been a bad thing to do on a monday when I wanted to use the boat on the following saturday. I figured in 5 days it would set up good enough. It has been only 24 hours, but this stuff doesn't seem to be doing much of anything. Its still very wet and panic is setting in.
Should I remove this stuff now and replace it with a fast cure 5200? Or should i be patient and see what saturday brings. If its not completely cured by the weekend and its gets wet will it be ruined? I can always do the job again, but would it be easier to remove it now while its wet, or when its hardened up some more? Is there a different product I can use that is less prone to running?
As far as the rub rail goes....I was very surprised to see it just screwed right into the transom. Not to mention the plastic covers over the rear lifting rings. Should these screw holes be filled up with silicone prior to installation? And what about the rub rail itself - I was going to use a silicone a little less permanent like 3M 4200. Is there a better choice?
