Recently purchased 2002 SN with a GT-40 PCM engine...since I've purchased the boat 2 months ago and less than 5 hours of operation I have gone through 2 alternator belts...check them each time prior to starting engine and another one bit the dust yesterday...smell it as it goes then smoke and voltage drops...any thoughts?

If the pulleys are rusty, they grind away at the belt quickly, and can cause you to go through lot of belts.
Same thing will happen if the boat is moored, and the battery gets partially discharged, running the bilge pump. Then the alternator has to work harder to recharge the battery, and this also increases belt wear.
If the boat is moored, with rusty pulleys, you have both problems going on.
A bad alternator could also be a culprit, it has to work harder to charge the battery.
A bad battery could also be a problem, it keeps drawing current from the alternator, and makes the alternator work harder.

I experienced the same problem and went thru two grooved belts on the alt before I picked up this. http://nautiqueparts.com/beltsetfordengines.aspx Automotive belts are typically grooved. If that is what you have been using… Switching to a solid belt might solve your problem. PCM makes the belts.Current: 2001 Air Nautique GT-40
