I got my boat out this year and am having an issue with the breaks on the trailer. It's not happening every time but about out of every 5 times, one of the back tires on the right side of the trailer locks up for just a second when I brake. I haven't checked the break fluid yet but was wondering if anyone else has encountered this before?

Do you have drum or disk brakes on your trailer?
I had drum brakes on my trailer, and before I switched to disk, I had an similar problem. As the brake shoes wear, the pistons in the wheel cylinder traveled farther out when the brakes were applied. There was some rust buildup at the ends of the wheel cylinders, and the pistons got stuck. Thinking the brakes were adjusted too tight, I loosened the adjustment, but that just made the piston travel even farther, and stick more often, and harder.
If you have drum brakes, try to adjust them a little tighter. See if that helps.
If you do have a problem with wheel cylinder rust, sooner or later you need to take things apart, and clean everything.

I sounds as though the brake solinod may be sticking. The factory ones will do that after some time. I would recomend checking your brake fluid first and then pop that wheel off. when you are looking at the druim the solonoid will be at the top of the drum. You can unbolt it. the piece should release and contract in your hand really easily when you have it out.
I just went thorugh this and opted to replace the brakes all together. They were $80 for the set on ebay.

I've checked the brake fluid and it looks okay. I believe I have the drum brakes by the looks of it. I took the tire off but had no idea what I was really looking at. Do I unscrew the bolts on the backside of the drum and open it up and take a look for something inside their?Last edited by Bryand82487; 06-30-2010, 05:49 PM.
