    occasional start/run problem 05 sante

In April I put in early on a nice day, cruised around in the chop. Docked for a while. Started up, left idling with music on. Got the family loaded and idle off toward launch. The engine started missing then died. Cranked fine, took a long time to fire (10 or so minutes of trying). Finally got started. Ran fine. Weeks later pulling daughter at ~15 mph it stalled. Could not get it to start. did some research , realized i had not changed the fuel filter 4 sometime . replace fuel filter, she fired right up.

Fast forward to today. We were just playing music at idle . the boat stalled again and took a while to get started. i finally got it started again after some sputtering ,and it ran fine . any ideas ?

forgive any typos i am typing on my phone

I hope everyone had a nice weekend.

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause an intermittant issue as described?

Fuel pump or ignition relays coming and going?

When it works, it works perfectly; no missing, runs fine at high reves for extended time, idles great.

When it dies, it cranks fine, but will not fire at all.

The couple of times this has happened it did return to life with some sputtering before finally running smoothly again.

I am guessing it is some <$100 part, but which one???

I recently fixed a similar problem by replacing the engine coolant temp sensor (ECT) and the air charge temp sensor ACT. Also never rule out the two relays by the engine.

almost identical problem except mine never goes dead just drops rpm's and then sputters back to life, i'll let you know what my local PCM mechanic says when he calls in the next day or two, i hope it's just a little $100 or less part, that would just make my week

The bad news is that it happened again. The good news is that it is in my garage (not working) so i can actually troubleshoot.

Well i can troubleshoot when my hip can flex again.

check the electrical connections on the fuel pump, had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago where it would almost die out while pulling someone then start running fine again, took it to the PCM mechanic and he found that there was a loose electrical connection on the high pressure fuel pump, they fixed it right up for me, took half a day to find it and fix plus replace oil, fuel filter, and a belt

Next time just turn key on and listen if the fuel pump primes. The relay on engine starts to go bad intermittently. In you garage where it is quiet, just turn ignition on without starting. You will hear the pump motor run. This is an easy check once you know what to listen for..

i assume that the pump that i can hear is the high pressure pump. I have been been able to hear that trying to start it. Is the low pressure pump on the same relay? Could it also be the ignition relay?

Tonight I finally got around to looking into this again. Turn boat to on without starting. I hear a pump spin up. Voltage was good at harness before it splits to each pump. Also good to low pressure pump. I didn't check high pressure as my multimeter probes didn't fit in. However, I unplugged only low pressure and turned on heard nothing. unplugged only high pressure and heard low pressure pump. This combined with a measly 4 or so psi at the schrader points to a bum high-pressure pump right? I think i should be getting close to 40 psi, even after the initial prime.

Last week I replaced the high pressure pump which was definitely dead, and quite crusty. Tried to prime it up and still had no pressure at the fuel rail (new pump was spinning though). I replaced the low pressure next and turned on once, got a few psi, bled the air, then tried again and got ~50 psi.

She started right up. I am hoping this was the fix.

If I had to guess what happened, the low pressure pump started failing, but still provided enough flow to keep the fcc primed most of the time. Occasionally the fcc would be emptied and the engine would die. Enough cycles of this finally killed the high pressure pump. Does that make sense? Could the high pressure pump have died faster due to excess dry running?

It's nice to have her running nicely again.
