Today we loaded the boat down with seven people and filled the left rear ballast plus another 150 in lead to go surfing. After about an hour I felt a shutter in the prop like it was cavatating. The boat was working hard to get out of the hole to pull the surfer. We would go about 50 feet and it would shutter again. It got worse and I shut it down and pumped all the water out. I put it on the lift and checked the prop and it is good. I didn't feel the rpm's go up when it shuttered, it felt more like something was slipping somewhere. I let it sit for fifteen minutes and jumped back in and took off all was well. I guess I can load it up with ballast and check it again, but other then that, how do you check to see of your transmission is slipping. The fluid level is okay.

Were you surfing on the same side as the gas vent (port)? I had a similar problem last year where I was taking in water in my gas vent when heavily weighted for surfing. It would shutter and stumble but still run. If I let it sit, it ran good. That was because the water settled out in the fuel/water separator and it had good gas for a while. Then after running, it became blended and it would stumble again.
Drain your fuel/water separator into a glass jar and let it sit. If you have more than a 1/4 inch of water, I'd say that was your problem.
I installed a T in the vent line and ran a 3/8 hose to a check valve. I now seal off the gas vent when surfing and the hose/check valve will equalize the pressure in the gas tank.1962 Classic

Raindog, thanks for the suggestion. If i heard the motor miss, or hessitate, i would think you are correct in water in the gas. My problem felt like I had bent the prop and the boat would shake. From my reading and asking questions, I think my tranny was slipping. With all the weight in the boat and it "listed" to one side all the oil can run to the side of the tranny and cause it to slip. Some people experience it on ski boats when they have to go around an island to come back to a course. I have heard of some people extending the breather cap on the tranny with a hose up to the top of the motor with a small filter on the end and then overfill their tranny's by a cup to two. I need more help or suggestings before I overfill my tranny.
