Trailer Lights

My trailer lights have gone out. Break lights and signal lights work, but no running lights anywhere? Any suggestions before I spend $$$$ taking it to a mechanic? It's an 02 DHM trailer.

Check to make sure the tow vehicle does not have a blown fuse in the trailer light circuit. Many modern tow vehicles have separate fuses for the trailer lights, so if the trailer has a short circuit, the light on the tow vehicle continue to work.

Check the grounds, too. Chances are, if you have a fuse out in the tow vehicle it could be caused by a short on the trailer. Using a test light to trace where the power is flowing helps as well. My 02 DHM trailer had a similar problem that was caused by a bad ground where the negative wire was riveted to the trailer frame. I drilled out the rivet, cleaned up the metal underneath, and bolted it back in with a screw and nylock nut. Good as new.

From personal experience with trailer lights, it's always been a bad ground.
